How does couples therapy work and how can it help?
All couples face challenges — whether just starting out, navigating life changes, or feeling stuck in recurring patterns. Relationships don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. Whether you want to repair, reconnect, or prepare for the future, couples therapy can help you build a stronger, more resilient, and intentional relationship. Who I Work With I support couples navigating: Conflict, communication challenges, or recurring arguments Infidelity, betrayal, or loss of trust Parenting or co-parenting stress, including postpartum adjustments Intimacy and emotional closeness Balancing work, family, and relationship demands Major life transitions, career changes, or grief Mental health or chronic illness impacts on the relationship Blended families and extended family dynamics My Approach As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I integrate evidence-based tools like the Gottman Method (Level 1 Trained) and PREPARE/ENRICH assessments, along with a systemic perspective. I work to help couples understand not just what is happening in their relationship, but why, supporting each partner to feel heard, respected, and valued. What We’ll Work On: Strengthening communication and conflict management Rebuilding emotional safety and trust Deepening connection and intimacy Coping with stressors as a team Creating practical strategies for lasting relationship health Reach out here to schedule your first appointment or ask questions to see if you would a good fit — I’d be honored to support you both.
Hi - I'm Maria Dimova (She/Her), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina. I take a no-nonsense approach, with a touch of humor, to life’s challenges and mental health. You may look like you have it all together on the outside, but inside you feel overwhelmed, anxious, and exhausted from trying to do it all. Maybe you’re feeling disconnected from your partner, preparing for marriage, or navigating postpartum changes, the demands of motherhood, or a major life transition. Perfectionism may keep you striving without ever feeling “enough,” and the stress can strain your closest relationships. Life can feel like hiking a steep ridge — exhausting, uncertain, and lonely. What you want most is to feel calmer, more balanced, and more connected — both to yourself and with the people who matter most.

How do you work with clients with relationship issues?
As humans, we are all relational beings. When you enter the therapy room, you not only are bringing yourself in but you are also bringing in the beliefs of your grandparents, parents, etc. I believe it is important to discuss these areas as they can have a major impact on our lives. Together we can navigate your relationships whether it is through boundary setting, learning communication skills, or realizing what is healthy vs unhealthy.
I believe the therapy process is a marathon, not a sprint. Pacing and patience are key to the type of collaborative therapy I offer. In this “marathon”, I am open to discussing what tactics you want to use to create the change you want to see. As a counselor, I use myself as a vehicle for change in the therapeutic process. I bring a warm, personable, and laid-back nature to each session because I believe everyone needs a comfortable space to share their story. I push my clients in the direction of their goals, but I respect the importance of pacing and patience during the therapy “marathon”. I utilize an eclectic approach to meet you where you are. Some of these approaches include Adlerian, Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness therapies. I have experience working with student-athletes and I know how difficult it is juggling academics, work, school, sports, and a personal life. I also enjoy working on self-esteem building. I invite not only student-athletes, but any adolescents and adults who are struggling with life's pressures. If you are looking for someone who will take the role of pushing you to meet your goals while still staying in your corner cheering you on, please feel free to reach out.
