How do you work with clients with depression?
When working with clients who have depression, it’s important to provide a safe, empathetic space where they feel seen and supported. Building trust and showing patience is key, as motivation and energy may be low. Helping clients identify small, manageable goals can foster a sense of progress. Exploring thoughts, behaviors, and emotional patterns using approaches to help shift negative thinking. Encouraging routine, self-care, and connection with others also supports recovery. It's important to validate their experience while gently challenging hopelessness.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the complexities of life and wonder where to turn for guidance? What's your experience with clients with depression?
I have worked with folks with depression for 13 years. I validate their experience and find out more about how they are experiencing the depression. What does it feel like in your body? How is it impacting your life? What makes the depression worse or better? What message might depression be sending? It is most important to gain a full understanding first, and then discuss how to help that person move forward in their life in a way that feels reasonable to them.

I welcome individuals of all identities to my practice, and provide a non-judgmental atmosphere. What's your experience with clients with depression?
My approach to clients struggling with depression is exploring the events that have led to the current symptoms. Then I work very closely with clients to begin to identify ways to uplift the mood by focusing on some of the positive aspects of the client's life. This is important because where attention goes, energy flows... what you spend your time focusing on are the things you will see more of around you. Intentionally focusing on some positive things opens us up to seeing more positive things.
My goal is to empower clients to make positive changes. It can be difficult to envision positive changes and growth when you don't see the way. I have worked with so many diverse people over the years that have experienced events that left them with difficulty coping. I have experience working with people who have experienced traumatic events in their lives. I work with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorder, ODD, and many other difficulties people face. I've worked with parents to understand how to help their child. I'm a HeartMath Certified Practitioner, which brings some incredible strategies to the table. My eclectic approach allows me to collaborate with clients and tailor services to their specific needs. Mindfulness is an incredible way to become grounded, and it offers the space to respond to stressful situations rather than reacting to them. I use CBT and other mindfulness techniques to focus on exactly what clients can do in the moment to focus. Through my experience I understand how difficult it may be to reach out for help. I have found that the energy of another person often acts as a buffer during counseling sessions. A counselor often provides that space for open communication between family members. I welcome you to call or email today. I am an LPC intern working under the supervision of Dr. Angela Waggoner, LPC | VA license number 0701007809.
