About Abby

As a teacher of Deaf/HoH students, I was often frustrated with attempts at finding mental health providers who could communicate with my students in their preferred language. Throughout my years as a mother and teacher, the importance of addressing mental health early and effectively became painfully apparent. In my quest to find ways to support my children and my students, I found a new passion. Returning to graduate school was a scary endeavor, but one I am so glad I chose. Now I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, able to provide mental health counseling services to hearing people and Deaf/HoH people in whichever mode of communication they prefer. It is my honor to be invited into the lives of my clients and walk with them through their mental health journeys.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

My own mental health journey combined with frustrations with attempts to find mental health for my students prompted me to become a counselor. The connections made with my clients and the honor of witnessing their journeys is what keeps me motivated to continue working as a therapist and counselor.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Trying something new is scary. I understand this. Sharing details of your struggles with a stranger is even scarier. For those who are hesitant to try therapy, I encourage you to consider if what you are currently doing to manage struggles is working. If it is not, why not try something different? Another thing I encourage people to consider is that if you don't connect well with one therapist/counselor, try someone else. For therapy to be successful, the fit between therapist and client is essential.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

Connecting with my clients and meeting them where they are is important to me. This means I have no one size fits all prescription to working with clients. While the theory I find most helpful is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, I am prepared to use several different approaches to meet client needs.

What's your experience with acceptance and commitment (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is one of my preferred methods as I've found it is easily adaptable to meet the needs of clients.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

A typical session with me begins with a check in and usually me asking how our time together would be best spent. While I might have a plan in mind, it is always more important that topics addressed in sessions are the topics that are important to the client.

How do you work with clients with addiction?

When clients present wishing to address issues of addiction, I will use Motivational Interviewing techniques to support the client in determining what changes they wish to make and evaluate their personal readiness for chaange.

What's your experience with children or adolescents?

As a former middle school teacher, I love working with Pre-teen and Adolescent clients. With adolescents I find a modified form of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to be very helpful.
