Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I have a natural curiosity toward people and the relationships we have with each other. Growing up, I loved learning about what creates a lasting relationship vs. a surface level relationship and how our upbringing and relationships that we have seen in our lives shape and influence who we are attracted to. What motivates me to continue is providing hope to couples and individuals who feel like there's no way out of their current situation and things will never get better. I've seen many relationships get through difficult times, and I enjoy sharing that hope with others as they work through challenges and grow stronger together.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Find someone that you feel comfortable with. Don't be afraid to call and speak to them briefly to see if they are a good fit. The most important thing is that you find someone who is not only an expert in their field, but someone who you can share openly with and feel comfortable talking to.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
Sessions with me are collaborative in nature. In the initial intake, I spend time getting to know the couple or individual better, learning about their story, previous physical/mental health history, and discussing with them the goals and treatment areas that we can work on. Subsequent sessions are a combination of checkin's on how things are going, if the tools utilized in session are working outside of session, and exploring/experiencing new ways of connecting or interpersonal growth through interventions done together in session.
How can you provide care remotely?
Sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant, secure platform. Clients receive a private link to join each session. Online therapy can be a great option for individuals who need flexibility due to busy schedules, live in areas with limited access to in-person care, or feel comfortable meeting virtually. The quality of care provided via telehealth, from me, is the same as in-person services. Because virtual therapy is not appropriate for every situation, I conduct a thorough screening process to ensure telehealth is a safe and effective option. Online therapy may not be suitable for individuals experiencing active suicidal or homicidal thoughts (within the past 3–12 months), ongoing self-harm behaviors, domestic violence situations, active psychosis, severe mental health crises, or significant discomfort with technology. In these cases, a higher level of care or in-person services may be recommended.
