How do you work with clients with anxiety?
I believe in the use of evidence-based practices to treat anxiety. I start with a thorough assessment of the person's symptoms, formulate a diagnosis and then determine which evidence-based practice will be most effective to provide relief to the client. I inform the client of their options. I discuss the treatment plan with the client and let them know of their options. I do not proceed unless the client is ready to begin as it is their process and their treatment. I also go at their pace in the treatment process. I also provide psychoeducation on anxiety as such knowledge can be powerful in the treatment process.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
During college, I started working at the area mental health center and loved the culture and the work that was being done. I did not plan to be a therapist or to go into private practice, but 25 plus years later here I am and I feel grateful to be here. The motivation to continue comes from the joy I feel in doing the work and helping others.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
The hesitancy makes sense, it not unusual to feel that way. I am happy to answer whatever questions they have about the process and hope through working together the hesitancy will decrease.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I believe therapy is interactive and we work as a team in the process. I am supportive and direct in my communication. I believe in the use of evidence-based practices in the therapy process as they are shown to be most effective in treating numerous issues. If I believe I am not the best therapist to best address your presenting needs, I will tell you so.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
A typical session begins with greetings and settling into the session-checking on how the client has been doing since we last met and what they might need from me for today's session. If the client has done any homework in between sessions, we will review it. Next, we might work on interventions to address their therapy goals and finish the session with steps for the next session. Perhaps discussing when we will meet next and what will happen prior to the next session. For example, practicing some of the interventions before next session (ex. make more time for themselves, spend more time with people who bring them joy, challenge their anxious thoughts).
How can you provide care remotely?
Remote therapy is shown to be just as effective as in person therapy for many individuals and a helpful option for individuals who don't have access to in-person providers in their areas. I started providing remote therapy in 2020 and have HIPAA compliant software to carry out this type of care.
