Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I notice that every time I'm asked this question, I answer it a little differently. It feels like many roads converged to lead me here to my role as a therapist. I experienced ongoing trauma and stressors in my childhood that left me believing there was something deeply wrong with me. As I slowly learned this belief to be untrue, my passion grew for helping others see that they are not the problem, but indeed the problem is the problem.
And as I was starting out in the early days of my post-college work life, where I had the opportunity to work with the community in various capacities, I found it was the moments of connection with people that kept me showing up and feeling motivated. I noticed how far deep listening and words of support could go in helping others feel empowered, and I began to see more clearly my unique gifts to spead some good in the world.
And what keeps me going? Well, showing up and seeing others slowly awaken to their own gifts, healing their wounds, and regaining their power by placing responsibility where it belongs... that's pretty incredible. I value and appreciate each person I've worked with, and while I show up as a therapist with the goal of helping others, I too grow and evolve along this journey.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
First of all, I would tell them that that I understand. Therapy can be an intimidating notion, especially if you've never tried it before or had negative experiences in the past. It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to open yourself up to someone you barely know. I would encourage them to do some research if you're not already familiar with different therapy modalities or all the various professional credentials in the field. GoodTherapy.org offers some really succint definitions on their site that can offer some inital insight. As therapists, we tend to lean heavily on acronyms and you're not alone if you don't know what they all mean. As you research, pay attention to what resonates with you. Are you looking for someone to help you challenge negative thoughts? Are you looking for someone to help you express yourself creatively? Do you want someone who will offer you an open space to fill how you choose, or would you rather be led through a step-by-step process? All these questions will help guide you to a practitioner who is most likely to be a good fit for you. After all, it is a good fit with your therapist, and willingness to show up and put in the work, that will ultimately determine whether you meet your goals in therapy. Ask questions, take advantage of those consultation calls, and ultimately trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right to you with a particular therapist or approach, it's okay to put on the breaks and continue your search. You are the only one who can truly know what is right for you.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I am open-minded and non-judgmental, and I enjoy a good laugh. I am experienced in a variety of settings and have worked with folks from many walks of life. I love working with new (and experienced) parents in finding ways to show up for themselves and their families. I also have significant experience with kids and teens, and enjoy providing them a validating space to process life's challenges. As a Highly Sensitive Person myself, I enjoy supporting other sensitive individuals understand and appreciate their unique gifts and challenges. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you think we may be a good fit. I am happy to answer any questions!
