About Ava
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have worked in the therapeutic field for over 20 years. People want to be heard, loved, and accepted without judgment for their thoughts and feelings. As a therapist, I provide that safe space for individuals to do so. I take pride in helping my clients look beyond the surface of personal challenges to identify and heal root issues. I have experience with children, adolescents, and adults with mental health conditions and other social stressors. I specialize in helping individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, relationship and parenting issues.
How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?
CBT looks like challenging a core belief, a negative thought, limiting beliefs, all by examining your reality, finding the proof to validate these thoughts and beliefs and finding ways to reframe and or move to radical acceptance.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I grew up in Kingston Jamaica and would say i grew up in a middle-class home, never experienced food or housing insecurity. I remember days driving down the street and seeing people who were unhoused and praying for them or wondering why they were living like that. I always wanted to help them or humanized them, even though i didn't know what that meant. As I became a teen, moved to NYC, saw more homelessness and was old enough to give someone 50 cents on the corner, i knew then, i wanted to help others in some way.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Come as you are! Remember that the journey is for you and no one else. Be gently with yourself, give yourself grace, especially in world where it is easy for others to not give grace, so it is important to give it to yourself. Now is the time to advocate for yourself, look at self and identify the greatness that is just waiting to escape from being held hostage by the past and trauma.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
I am honest. I am compassionate. I have the ability to speak the unspoken. I understand the value in accountability, hence why truth telling is important to the journey. if you are looking to hear what you want to hear, or to always be right, then we are not a good fit. The only way to get thru this and over this, is by being honest with yourself in a raw, real and authentic way. Sometimes that can simply acknowledging how angry you are or how sad or hurt you are, or you might here, hey, you might have been wrong in this situation. Be open to both. Both stances can be cathartic.
How does mindfulness-based therapy (MBCT) work and how can it help?
After completing a 100hr Meditation and Mindfulness training, i felt the power in silencing the mind, and want to share that with others. Mindfulness keeps you in the present.
