For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Don’t be afraid. Therapy can be challenging at times, but know that you are capable of doing difficult things. If your wellness has become your top priority, you have chosen to take a courageous step forward towards transformative healing.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

I remember when I was sitting on the other side of the counseling room as the client. It was the moment when I was ready for a change and decided that I’d had enough. Enough of feeling anxious and overwhelmed, having panic attacks that were both intrusive and disruptive to the life I was trying to create. Enough of feeling incessantly insecure, misunderstood, sad, angry, and lonely. Enough of feeling unvalued and unappreciated, yet being too afraid to communicate my most vulnerable needs, desires, and dreams to those whom I loved most. After all, it seemed like I was DOING enough of the “right” things—playing the role of a wife, mother, friend, daughter, executive administrator, entrepreneur, etc. But I was exhausted, confused, unsatisfied, and desperate for some long-lasting peace, relief, and release! Individual and couples counseling helped me to find my voice and make the positive change I so deeply desired in my life and in my relationships.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

We’ll do a ‘check in’ about how you have been doing in the past week. Based on your feedback, we can process through the experiences that have impacted your thoughts and feelings, and as a result, your behaviors, choices, and even your physical health. How has this affected the way you treat yourself? Or the way you interact with your loved ones, friends, colleagues, etc.? Perhaps we will identify some patterns and cycles that have been unaware to you but apparent to them.  Most importantly, however, we will reveal and affirm your strengths and gifts to help restore your self image, revive your relationships, and reach your personal goals. Oh...and there will homework to help you stay engaged until we meet again in the next session. Your commitment to the process will help bring about the change you desire.

What's your experience with relationship counseling?

Making a marriage or relationship work takes, well...work! But what a beautiful, transformative work it can be. I believe that a true love story is depicted when the relationship allows for the refining of character, a transformation of the heart, and changing of the soul towards the one you choose to love. Typically, in couples therapy, the goal is to reestablish and/or build upon the trust, commitment, and friendship that connected you and your partner at the beginning of your love journey. Therefore, at every turn, we will focus on building intimacy through honest and transparent communication about personal fears, unmet needs, and unspoken dreams. I’ll teach you how to say what you mean and mean what you say while managing your judgments and criticisms towards your partner when conflicts arise. Because, inevitably, couples will be faced with conflict or challenges (e.g., values and beliefs, finances, intimacy, sex, addiction, child-rearing, infidelity, technology, in-laws, etc.) that can feel overwhelming and even seem irreparable at times.      But there is hope! By choosing to push through the hard things that surface in the process, being willing to change within yourself before demanding change in your partner, and continuously showing up for your partner even when you don’t feel like it, you will have the opportunity to create new purpose and meaning for your relationship.
