About Chanel
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Chanel Freeman’s journey into mental health began with a life-changing childhood experience, inspiring her commitment to mental wellbeing and helping underserved communities. She earned her BSN from D’Youville College in 2012 and spent over a decade caring for patients in mental health and substance use treatment, including on a med-surg forensic unit at a Level 1 trauma hospital. In 2020, seeking flexibility as a single mother, she earned her MSN and began practicing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. In January 2024, Chanel founded Chanel Freeman NP in Psychiatry PLLC, providing compassionate, accessible outpatient mental health care. Licensed in New York and Florida, she works closely with patients to offer personalized support and promote lasting mental wellbeing.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I became a PMHNP because my own life challenges strengthened my mental health, and I realized I could use my experience to help others navigate theirs. This motivates me to provide compassionate, practical support, empowering patients to overcome obstacles and build resilience.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
People considering working with me should know that I’ve been in mental health since age 19, starting as a CNA, then as an RN on a forensic mental health unit, and now as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I bring years of hands-on experience and a deep understanding of complex mental health needs, and I’m dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized care, especially for underserved populations.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
In the first session, we gather your background and discuss the issues you’re facing. Together, we set goals and develop strategies to address them. Sessions combine talk therapy with CBT techniques, giving you practical tools while providing a supportive space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
How do you work with clients with anxiety?
When working with clients with anxiety, we start by exploring your specific experiences and challenges. Together, we review all treatment options that may suit your situation and comfort level, including therapy, CBT techniques, and medication. The goal is to create a personalized plan that helps you manage anxiety and feel more in control.
How do you work with clients with depression?
When working with clients experiencing depression, we explore your experiences and challenges in a supportive, nonjudgmental space. Together, we review all treatment options that may suit your needs and comfort, including therapy, CBT techniques, and medication, to create a personalized plan that helps improve mood, motivation, and overall wellbeing.
How can you provide care remotely?
Stress and challenges like commuting, time constraints, or feeling anxious in new environments can make in-person appointments difficult. You can join sessions remotely via a secure link that will be sent to you, allowing you to participate from wherever you feel most comfortable.
How do you work with clients with ADHD?
When working with clients with ADHD, we explore your experiences and challenges in a supportive, nonjudgmental space. Together, we review all treatment options that may suit your needs and comfort, including therapy, behavioral strategies, CBT techniques, and medication, to create a personalized plan that helps improve focus, organization, and overall daily functioning.
How do you work with clients with parenting issues?
When working with clients on parenting challenges, I help explore specific struggles, identify stressors, and develop practical strategies. I provide support and guidance to help parents feel more confident, balanced, and capable in their daily parenting role.
