Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I think the road to me becoming a therapist began in adolescence when I took a psychology class and it was the first time I was actually interested in learning about a subject. Unbeknownst to me at the time, learning about psychology was the first opportunity I had to understand my own struggles, and this eventually led to my own therapeutic process that’s shown me the benefits of being vulnerable with a safe, trusted professional that leads to healing. My strongest motivation to continue being a therapist is my gratitude that I get to work collaboratively with my clients so that they are able to enrich their lives in the ways they feel is the most authentic.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
I completely understand the hesitance with beginning therapy. For some of us, we may have received stigmatizing messages that therapy means we are in need of help, and this may be an incredibly challenging emotion to have to navigate. Being vulnerable with someone you’ve never met may even feel like a complete risk, but I’d like you to know that you are worth this risk and that you deserve to heal.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
I typically ask what topics you may have in mind that you would like to discuss as an opener. I view therapy as a collaborative process so I want to give you the freedom to discuss whatever is on your mind. It’s completely natural to not always know where to start though, so in cases for that I will inquire about your chief concerns and how that has been impacting you so that we can discuss your treatment goals more in-depth. Some sessions may involve venting and processing emotions and experiences or practicing coping skills, while others may be about learning the connections between our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relational patterns, and somatic symptoms.
How do you work with clients with eating disorders?
My work initially begins with assessment of what areas of support you may need to better your relationship with food, body, and yourself so that we are able to establish treatment goals together. Pending your needs, I may provide you with additional resources (such as a dietitian) to better assist you with your treatment goals. My focus while working with eating disorder concerns may include exploring together how the eating disorder may be functioning as a coping skill for unsettling and uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, as well as life experiences that has contributed to the development in the disordered eating behaviors and body image concerns. I utilize a Health At Every Size Approach as well as intuitive eating goals in my work, and incorporate a mixture of Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Cognitive Behavioral therapy, and Dialectical Behavior therapy tools to assist in my clients’ recovery process.
