About Ciera
I'm a queer, neurodivergent sex and relationship therapist. I work with individuals, couples, and larger relationship constellations. I help my clients increase their comfort with their bodies and sexualities, better connect to their loved ones, find peace from anxiety, and move away from shame. Though I work with all clients, I particularly love working with other queer and/or neurodivergent people. I also specialize in clients healing from religious trauma.
How does couples therapy work and how can it help?
Couples or relationship therapy can look different depending on the issues a couple is facing. It can help because I'm outside of the relationship and I'm trained to see patterns and know how to best interrupt unhelpful cycles. I help my clients better understand and hear one another, find the behaviors and communication breakdowns that keep them stuck, and figure out new ways of interacting that move them forward.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I became a therapist after working as a bartender. I loved connecting with people and hearing their stories. There was one specific moment when a customer was opening up to me about sexual trauma she had experienced. I remember thinking "I'm not equipped to help her in this moment, but I want to be." That was the moment it clicked for me that I wanted to be a therapist. What motivates me to continue is watching my clients grow.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Therapy is what you make it! If you are skeptical or scared, tell your therapist. If you want something specific out of therapy, tell your therapist. If therapy isn't working for you, tell your therapist. The client and therapist collaborate together and the right therapist for you will help you get the type of therapy that works specifically for you.
