How do you work with clients with anxiety?
I really like the REBT method for anxiety. I tend to use an eclectic approach, involving different modalities but find this approach to be particularly helpful in combatting those false beliefs and also those instances we believe reinforce those false beliefs about ourselves and the world. It can help show someone the severity of their catastrophizing and work towards seeing the world and situations differently.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
From as far back as I can remember, I’ve been a helper. I have always been someone who was good at listening and providing feedback. I also always had an interest in the “why” behind the things people did. Understanding the “why” helped me realize and be more empathetic to the motivations behind people’s actions.
How do you work with clients with depression?
Again, I tend to use an eclectic approach, but find that a strengths-based and CBT approach are my go-tos. When we are experiencing depression, how we view the world and ourselves is dark or sometimes it’s nothing at all. By challenging that and highlighting an individual’s strengths and challenging those negative thoughts and behaviors, we can work towards minimizing those depressive symptoms before the become all-consuming.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
If you’re considering it at all, you’re more than halfway there. There is something… a seed that has been planted that is telling them this “might” work. The thing is, the worst thing that can happen is that things stay the exact same. No one says they tried therapy and it made things worse.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
They are collaborative. Ultimately, you’re the expert on yourself… I’m here to guide you and provide feedback. I can’t enter a session with an individual knowing exactly what they need to do, otherwise I’d just tell you, you’d do it, and that’d be the end of that. Sessions are truly about exploration, exploring what has happened, what has not worked, how that has impacted you and those around you, etc. You are the writer of your own story, I’m merely someone to help you find the resolve to change how it goes and the ending.
