For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Starting therapy can feel really scary. You may have questions - "What am I supposed to say?" "Where do I start?" "How am I supposed to talk about this stuff?" You may feel vulnerable. There may be things that you haven't been able to discuss with anyone, and just opening up those issues is intimidating! And, of course, this means that you are stepping out to trust a stranger with the most vulnerable parts of your life. My first goals in therapy are to help you to feel known and to help you to feel safe. I am going to listen to you, I am not going to judge you, and I am going to try to meet you exactly where you are in your own journey. I want you to understand that whatever you are dealing with, no matter how hard it seems, you are not broken. You are just a person who is dealing with life, and life can be hard. My job is to help you to manage that hard stuff so that you can live the kind of life that you want to live.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

My counseling style is quite eclectic, and my goal is to help you to feel safe and to get to know you and your needs so that we can help you to move forward in your life. Counseling sometimes focuses primarily on building skills, sometimes on processing thoughts and experiences from the past, and sometimes on thinking through day to day stressors. It is always grounded in listening and providing encouragement and support. My style is very casual - you can expect that I am usually wearing t-shirts, hoodies and ball caps, and you are free to call me by my first name. Some people find a more formal style is more representative of professionalism, however I believe that clients tend to grow best when they feel more comfortable and relaxed.

How can you provide care remotely?

The Covid 19 pandemic created dramatic rethinking about how therapy can and should be delivered. While clinicians have been working on providing teletherapy for quite a few years, it took a global crisis to bring it fully into the mainstream. I have been providing teletherapy for the last three years, on a full time basis for the last year. I have found that while it is not the best intervention for everybody, it is nonetheless a way of overcoming many of the traditional barriers to treatment that can make it so hard to get started, and is every bit as effective for most clients as in-person therapy. When you see me, you don't have to drive to an office or sit in a waiting room. You don't have to take a large portion of your day to attend the appointment. No one can see you walk in and out of a therapists office. You are not limited by geography or transportation. You can attend therapy from the place where YOU feel comfortable, and you can do so in a way that is minimally disruptive to your life. I can provide teletherapy through video, phone, or live text chat. If you are someone who prefers not to be on camera during a session, phone or text could be great alternatives for you. If you are concerned about your own privacy during a session, text chat sessions can be completed pretty much anywhere. Teletherapy allows for a kind of flexibility I think you will come to appreciate!
