About Derryl

Derryl spent the majority of his undergraduate career in a clinical research lab where he investigated psychological and social predictors of emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents and how parenting styles influenced transmission of trauma. This motivated him to seek further education in mental health and determine how he can play a role in serving the community. A few of Derryl's therapeutic modalities include: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helping clients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors, Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Incorporating mindfulness techniques to promote self-awareness and stress reduction, and Client-Centered Therapy: Providing a supportive and empathetic environment for clients to explore their thoughts and emotions. One of my strongest passions is being a resource to others, while gaining insight from their unique stories. "I believe that counseling is a great tool for individuals, couples, and families to build the skills to have more meaningful relationships and manage their mental health throughout their daily lives. I understand that seeking help can be a challenging step, so my goal is to walk alongside you in your personal journey and promote growth as we explore your past experiences and future goals. Together, we will work towards your goals and empower you to make positive changes in your life."

What's your approach to anxiety, and what does progress look like for clients?

My approach to anxiety focuses on helping clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based techniques, I help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthy coping strategies, and build greater self-awareness. I provide a supportive, empathetic space where clients can explore their experiences, recognize their triggers, and learn practical ways to manage stress and anxiety in their daily lives. Progress looks different for everyone, but my goal is to help clients feel more confident in managing their emotions, responding to challenges, and navigating everyday situations. Together, we work toward building resilience, strengthening relationships, and developing skills that support long-term emotional well-being.

How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work, and what do sessions look like?

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on understanding how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence one another. My approach helps clients recognize negative or unhelpful thought patterns and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding to challenging situations. By combining CBT with mindfulness techniques, I encourage clients to become more aware of their emotions, manage stress, and build practical coping skills. During sessions, we work collaboratively to explore your concerns, identify patterns that may be affecting your well-being, and establish meaningful goals. Sessions may include discussing recent experiences, practicing strategies to challenge unhelpful thoughts, and exploring techniques you can apply in your daily life. My goal is to create a supportive, client-centered environment where you feel heard and empowered to make positive, lasting changes.
