About Dominic
You are exhausted from constantly holding things together, even when everything inside is falling apart. You're overwhelmed by stress, disconnected from your relationships, and questioning beliefs that once felt certain. These struggles can leave you anxious, burnt out, and unsure of who you are or what comes next. That’s where reaching out to a professional can help. Dr. Dominic Schmuck is a licensed psychologist with over a decade of experience helping adults through life transitions, relationship trauma, and religious shifts (including from high-demand faiths like Mormonism, which he personally left). He works with thoughtful, driven individuals ready to face what’s not working and create a more grounded, meaningful life. Dominic’s style is practical, collaborative, and direct—with a touch of humor when it helps. Sessions focus on real change, not just talk. Clients appreciate his ability to hold space for hard emotions while offering clarity, tools, and support to move forward. If you’re ready to feel more like yourself again and take the next step toward growth, Dominic is here to help. Call, email, or visit his website to schedule a free consultation. Note: Dr. Dominic Schmuck accepts Aetna insurance (excluding Medicaid, Medicare, and Aetna CVS plans) or private pay. Superbills available for out-of-network reimbursement. Therapy hours: Mon–Fri, 9am–2pm.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I became a therapist because of my fascination with human nature and my desire to understand what makes us who we are. Originally, I pursued a Ph.D. in counseling psychology with the intention of becoming a researcher. However, during my training, I discovered the art of therapy and found that I truly enjoyed working one-on-one with individuals. What motivates me to continue as a therapist is seeing the positive changes that clients can experience by learning to live authentically and in line with their values. Witnessing newfound freedom and life satisfaction in my clients is what inspires me to keep practicing psychology and helping others.
How do you work with clients with trauma and PTSD?
I understand that dealing with trauma and PTSD can be difficult and overwhelming. As a psychologist, I've dedicated my doctoral training and career to learning evidence-based practices for trauma-informed care and psychological treatments for PTSD. It can be challenging to find a therapist who knows when and how to apply different interventions for trauma, as exposure techniques and other treatments may not be appropriate for every case. As your therapist, I'll work with you to find the best treatment options for your unique situation. I specialize in helping people heal from religious trauma, but I'm here to support you regardless of the nature of your trauma. During our therapy sessions, I'll provide a safe and non-judgmental environment where you can share your experiences and explore how trauma has affected different areas of your life. Together, we'll work at a pace that's comfortable for you and use treatments that fit your individual needs. Overall, my goal is to provide empathetic support as you work towards healing from trauma and PTSD. I'm here to help you navigate the healing process and find a path to recovery that's right for you.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
When considering working with me, I want you to know that I strive to create a warm, open, and caring space where you can feel comfortable being your authentic self. Many of my clients have described me as non-judgmental and even fun! In fact, when appropriate and under the right circumstances, I may incorporate humor or sarcasm into our conversations, because laughter can be an important part of the healing process. My approach is based on scientific best practices and is secular in nature. My ultimate goal is to help you feel confident in discontinuing therapy as soon as feasible and living a fulfilling life, despite any difficulties that may arise. To accomplish this, I adapt my treatment techniques and approaches to meet your individual needs. Whether you need guidance in navigating a specific challenge or simply need someone to talk to, I'm here to support you on your journey.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
In our sessions together, I want to make sure you feel comfortable and heard. I believe you are the expert on your experiences and the difficulties you are facing, so I will always ask what you would like to focus on during each session. From there, we can work together to address those specific issues, and I strive to offer practical methods to help you cope and navigate your challenges. Depending on your needs, we can engage in skills training and behavioral modification, or simply use our time to talk through everything you need while I provide a non-judgmental and empathetic listening ear to help you process your emotions. My goal is to create a safe space for you to feel supported and empowered in your journey towards healing and growth.
How do you work with clients with relationship issues?
Working with clients who have relationship issues can be challenging because relationships are complex and unique to each individual. I understand that relationships can bring both happiness and sadness, and there is no one right way to approach them. Sometimes, it may be necessary to end a difficult relationship, while at other times, finding new ways to interact with the person can lead to personal growth and improvement in the relationship. I will work with you to identify your thoughts, values, and desires to help you make decisions that work best for you. If needed, we can also engage in relational skills training. It's important to remember that even with the best communication skills, conversations can still be difficult and hurtful. My approach is tailored to your specific needs, and I will support you in finding ways to navigate your relationships in a way that is authentic and comfortable for you.
How do you work with clients with spiritual or religious issues?
I'm experienced in working with individuals from an LDS/Mormon, Christian, and Muslim background. I understand that dealing with spiritual and religious issues can be challenging, and I create a supportive and non-judgmental environment for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. I specialize in working with people navigating faith transitions. I've navigated my own experience in this area, and I'm here to help you whether you're continuing with your religious practices or transitioning away from your faith. During our sessions, I'll be there to help you contemplate existential questions and explore new ideas. Finding new meaning and purpose in life can take time, but my goal is to support you throughout the process. I can also help you navigate relationship issues during your faith transition, such as communicating with your loved ones or navigating employment issues. My aim is to provide a safe and welcoming space for you to explore your spiritual or religious concerns, regardless of your beliefs. Together, we can work towards finding peace and fulfillment in your life.
