Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
From a young age, I knew I wanted to be in the helping profession and focused on the field of psychology as early as high school. I was a psychology major throughout college with a minor in sociology and never once doubted this path. After college, I decided to work as a preschool teacher and it is during this time that I felt compelled to further my studies and expand upon my focus on psychology by attaining a Masters in Human Development, with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy. I attended the best MFT program at the time, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (also, received my Bachelors degree from Va Tech).
My love for relationships, family, and personal development have stayed with me throughout my journey. During the years that I was raising my two daughters, I practiced clinically in various settings and immersed myself in anything professionally relevant that I could, in addition to remaining focused on how to grow within the marriage and family therapy field. I can honestly say, that as much as my personal relationships and family motivate me to continue, my clients are the true motivating factor. I am often in awe in what they accomplish during their therapy journey.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
I first want to say, that I completely understand. Therapy is a very personal decision and I commend anyone who takes this step in their lives. If you are thinking about beginning therapy, then you have already begun the process to personal and relational growth, as you are realizing that you may need a personal space, specifically designated for you (and your relationships), with a person with whom you can trust to help you navigate some of the most challenging times of your life. And with that, I recommend that you ask the questions needed and seek the comfort you are seeking to make this experience exactly as it should be for you...comfortable, positive, helpful, and supportive.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I think it's important for people to know that in addition to my professional and clinical background in working with individuals, couples, and families, I have a personal history that has uniquely impacted my work. I not only stayed at home to raise my two daughters and understand what goes into that family experience, but I've had to traverse the course of helping my cognitively disabled and speech-impaired daughter. My world has forever shifted due to this different direction in my life and being in the role of a caregiver, along with natural parenting, has provided for an even deeper understanding of immense life stressors and the coping strategies needed for the whole family system.
