About Emily
Hi, I'm Emily. I'm a trauma-informed counselor who provides a calm, collaborative, and culturally attuned space for healing for teens, adults, and families in a fully virtual setting. My work integrates Trauma-Focused CBT, mindfulness-based strategies, person -centered therapy, strength-based approaches, and multicultural perspectives to support clients in understanding their experiences and building practical tools for resilience.
How does acceptance and commitment (ACT) work and how can it help?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, helps people build a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Instead of trying to fight, avoid, or get rid of emotional pain, ACT focuses on helping clients notice their inner experiences with more openness and less judgment. It teaches mindfulness skills so people can become more present, make space for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, and stop letting those experiences fully control their choices. ACT can help by guiding people to identify what truly matters to them and then take meaningful action in alignment with those values, even when life feels hard. For someone dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, or major life changes, this approach can reduce the struggle against painful emotions and increase psychological flexibility. Over time, ACT can help clients feel more grounded, more self-aware, and better able to move forward with purpose, resilience, and compassion toward themselves.
How do you work with clients on the autism spectrum?
When working with clients on the autism spectrum, I focus on creating a calm, supportive, and neurodiversity-affirming space where clients feel respected and understood. I recognize that every autistic individual has unique strengths, needs, communication styles, and sensory experiences, so I tailor therapy to fit the person rather than expecting them to fit a single model. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally aware, with an emphasis on helping clients feel safe, build self-understanding, and develop tools that genuinely support their well-being. In sessions, I may integrate person-centered therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, strength-based support, and CBT-informed tools in ways that are practical and accessible. Depending on the client’s goals, we may work on emotional regulation, anxiety, identity, self-advocacy, stress management, life transitions, relationships, or processing overwhelming experiences. I also aim to honor sensory needs, communication preferences, and the client’s own pace, while supporting greater confidence, resilience, and self-acceptance.
