About Emily
I’m so glad you are here! My personal philosophy around therapy is that it is a tool used to help you on your journey until you are ready to let go of the helping hand and navigate your world using the coping skills, tools and resources you gained in therapy. Allow me to help you navigate through this confusing time and help you regain your confidence in yourself. As your therapist I can guide you towards improving your mood and relationships as well as strengthening your copings skills and problem solving abilities so that what once felt unmanageable is now manageable.

What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
I have extensive training in CBT and research suggestions it's effective in treating issues around anxiety, depression, addiction and more.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
Many people experience dark times in their life. For some, those dark times can lead to insight into their calling, as it did for me. I truly believe I was meant to be a therapist. I don’t remember wanting to do anything else. My journey to mental health counseling began as a volunteer group facilitator for those who have experienced intimate partner violence, physical and/or sexual abuse as a child or adult. I gained experience as an addiction counselor before entering grad school. I have 8 years of experience working in community mental health/DMH setting as an employment specialist, case manager and therapist before making the move to private practice. It’s fulfilling work to be a part of someone’s journey, no matter how dark it starts there is hope. I enjoy helping people realize their innate potential and heal.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
It is understandable to feel hesitation or even fear about starting therapy! Therapy does mean being vulnerable and through your vulnerability you will cultivate change. You will be surprised at what you can achieve. Therapy goes at your pace and with your goals in mind, as we get to know each other more your comfort will increase.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
Some people start their sessions knowing exactly what they want to discuss, others need prompting. Therapy is a collaboration, so we will work with each other to determine the topic of each session. For those that come to session without a topic, I tend to start out my sessions with a question, "Are there any changes in the last week or anything you want to focus on today". Together we will determine the agenda then I will help you explore how the session went and if there is anything left unaddressed.
