How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
I work with clients with OCD by helping them better understand the cycle of intrusive thoughts, anxiety, compulsive behaviors, and avoidance. My approach is structured, supportive, and solution-focused, while also being sensitive to each client’s family, relationship, legal, or life-transition stressors. I help clients identify patterns that keep OCD symptoms going, build healthier coping skills, and gradually reduce the need for compulsions. When appropriate, I also support families and co-parents in learning how to communicate effectively and avoid unintentionally reinforcing OCD-related behaviors.
How does exposure response prevention work and how can it help?
Exposure and Response Prevention, or ERP, is a highly effective therapy approach for OCD that helps clients gradually face feared thoughts, situations, or triggers without engaging in the compulsive behaviors they usually use to reduce anxiety. Over time, ERP helps the brain learn that anxiety can rise and fall without needing a ritual, reassurance, avoidance, or repeated checking. This can help clients feel more in control, reduce the power of intrusive thoughts, improve daily functioning, and build confidence in handling uncertainty.
