How does acceptance and commitment (ACT) work and how can it help?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps people develop a healthier relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences rather than struggling to eliminate them. Through mindfulness, self-awareness, and values-based action, ACT teaches clients how to respond more flexibly to life's challenges while staying connected to what matters most. This approach can be especially helpful for anxiety, depression, OCD, stress, life transitions, and relationship difficulties by helping individuals build psychological flexibility, reduce avoidance, and create lasting change aligned with their personal values.
How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
When working with OCD, I help clients understand the cycle of obsessions, anxiety, and compulsive behaviors that can keep them feeling stuck. Treatment focuses on developing awareness of intrusive thoughts, reducing the urge to engage in compulsions, and building tolerance for uncertainty and discomfort. Drawing from ACT, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)-informed strategies, emotion-focused work, and mindfulness practices, I support clients in learning that thoughts do not have to dictate behavior. Together, we work toward greater freedom, flexibility, and confidence so that OCD has less influence over daily life and important relationships.
