How about a heart-based approach that leverages expressive healing modalities and cultivates your own imaginative muscles? I am a licensed professional counselor and a registered expressive arts therapist, board-certified in both art therapy and music therapy, with special expertise in the Enneagram personality typing system, Jungian sand tray therapy, dreamwork, human shadow work, career-life planning, teletherapy, improvisation, consciousness studies and integrating experiences from non-ordinary states. Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I'm largely driven by my artist's identity, having witnessed and having had direct experience with the healing power of the arts. In the tradition of archetypal psychology, I see my role as serving the images that emerge in the therapeutic alliance--and this turns out to be quite a therapeutic venture.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

You will benefit most when you are ready to take that plunge, fully aware that therapy can be challenging--and worth the effort.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

The success of therapy depends very much on "fit," and I make no assumptions about that. Try a session if you think there might be a good fit between us, but do not feel obligated to continue if the chemistry is not there. It may help to know that my approach relies heavily on getting acquainted with and working with the imaginal realm. I rely primarily on "talk therapy," but there may be images arising in our conversation that prompts me to suggest working with a strong image with art materials. I'm known to assign homework of various kinds--so be prepared to work to get the most out of therapy!

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

The first session with me (or two or three, depending) is largely for the purpose of getting to know each other. I may ask you to take a personality assessment (the Enneagram) and to share with me your perceived challenges--and your perceived strengths, too. From that point, I work intuitively, with the intention of meeting you where you are and working with whatever therapeutic material arises. I'm comfortable with silence, witnessing, holding space and also offering my observations and thoughts about different ways of looking at things.

How can you provide care remotely?

I seen benefits to remote therapy and in-person therapy. The accessibility and convenience of remote therapy stands out, and there is a unique kind of intimacy possible in face-to-face virtual sessions.

What is your experience with career counseling?

In 2000 I published the career-life planning manual Follow Your Bliss, and in 2020 I published a second edition of the same book. This original work summarized many of my experiences in career counseling. I have a particular skill as a resume artist and in applying the arts to career-life planning tasks.

What's your experience with art therapy?

I'm board-certified in art therapy and have the highest credential in art therapy supervision (ATR-BCCS). I interpret the "art" in art therapy as referring to all the various art forms available to humans. I co-authored the book Minstrels of Soul: Intermodal Expressive Therapy, which details my personal approach to art therapy.

What's your experience with music therapy?

I have been board-certified in music therapy for many years. As such, I have skills in functional piano and guitar. I derive great personal pleasure from being a songwriter, flutist, and vocalist, and I have a large collection of drums and percussive instruments. Music therapy is most conducive to in-person therapy, of course, but frequently a topic in virtual conversations as well for those who resonate with that modality.

What's your experience with Jungian therapy?

Carl Jung was a strong influence on the development of my theoretical orientation. His writings, and even moreso those of neo-Jungian James Hillman, were foundational in my dissertation on songwriting and human shadow studies. Moreover, my approach to sand tray therapy is grounded in Jungian thought.

What's your experience with forensic psychology?

Much of my professional experiences has been in correctional settings, including medium security prisons in Minnesota. I served for 8 years at the Clinical Director of Minnesota's civil commitment treatment program for sexually violent persons, and I wrote the book chapter "Expressive Arts Therapy with Sexual Abusers" in the 2012 text Expressive Therapies for Sexual Issues.

What's your experience with expressive arts therapy?

I am one of the founding members of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA), a former board member and co-chair, and I possess the REAT (Registered Expressive Arts Therapist) credential. I have practiced, written, published and taught expressive arts therapy in a variety of venues over the years.
