About Jan

UPDATE: not currently accepting insurance, out of network only, but lets check your out-0f-network benefits and see whats up So, you're considering therapy? I get it, things are crazy and it feels like we are living in a really bad late-night movie, complete with sad and pathetic villains. I don't have any magic over here, but I do have a place where we can hopefully get you to a place that looks more like where you want to be. I have an eclectic approach, which is a fancy way of saying that I don't rely on any one way of getting to where you want to be. But my starting point is always from a place of your strengths, the things you are already doing well; you are not your symptoms. I trend toward elements from Acceptance and Commitment, Narrative, Positive Psychology, Existentialism, Brief Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered, Behavioral Activation, and Mindfulness. I am progressive in my politics, a non-believer, and I welcome cursing as a means of expression. I believe that humor can get us through a lot of things. I mention this only because I have often had difficulty finding my own therapists that didn't wince when I said fuck or want to steer me in a spiritual direction. I am LGBTQ+ and BIPOC affirming and welcome folks from all backgrounds and ethnicities.

What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

Tbh, I am more a fan of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Behavioral Activation, which focuses more on the "actions" part of the thoughts/feelings/actions triangle. For me, intentional actions are easier to change, rather than my thoughts. Having a therapist attempt to re-frame my negative thoughts always just pushed my oppositional buttons, maybe you've felt a similar way.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I have always been the person that people feel comfy talking to. Like, people in grocery store lines have told me deeply personal things. There is no judgment. I really like seeing someone "get it" and there is nothing better than helping someone become their authentic self.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

That therapy isn't magic nor are there any wrong ways to do it. Therapy is a place to figure it out, make some plans, and find some confidence and peace.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

I work from a place of strengths, finding out what you are doing right and moving forward from there. I don't see you as a pathology, but a human having an human experience. We all have an ideal self, contentment comes from living as best we can in that best version of ourselves.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

I want to know about who you want to be, how you want to move through your world. We will talk about the things keeping you from already doing that and figure out a way to make those things smaller. I highly value humor and radical honesty. I won't shy away from calling bullshit, but it will always come from a place of deep respect for your process.

How can you provide care remotely?

I have recently transitioned to a purely remote environment. This is the way I would want to be in therapy. It cuts down on so many barriers: childcare, transportation, time, motivation issues stemming from both physical and mental health issues, etc...
