How does couples therapy work and how can it help?

Couples therapy is a structured process that helps partners improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their emotional connection. It provides a safe space to explore relationship challenges, understand each other’s perspectives, and develop healthier ways to interact. Whether a couple is struggling with ongoing conflict, trust issues, or feeling disconnected, therapy helps create a foundation for deeper understanding and lasting change. How It Works: In couples therapy, I work as a neutral guide, helping both partners express their thoughts and feelings in a way that fosters connection rather than conflict. We’ll identify patterns that may be contributing to misunderstandings and work on strategies to improve communication, rebuild trust, and enhance emotional and physical intimacy. What a Session Looks Like: • Assessment & Goal Setting: The first session is about understanding your relationship dynamics, individual concerns, and shared goals. • Communication Work: I’ll help you recognize how you communicate and provide tools to express your needs without escalating tension. • Conflict Resolution: We’ll explore how you handle disagreements and work on skills to resolve conflicts in a healthy and productive way. • Healing & Connection: If past hurts or betrayals are affecting the relationship, we’ll address them in a way that fosters healing rather than resentment.  What Clients Should Know: • You don’t have to be on the brink of breaking up to benefit from therapy—many couples come to strengthen their relationship before problems escalate. • It’s not about placing blame but about understanding each other and growing together. • Progress takes time, and some sessions may feel emotional, but the work done in therapy can lead to a stronger, healthier relationship. Couples therapy provides the tools to break unhealthy cycles and build a partnership that feels safe, supportive, and fulfilling.

How do you work with clients with anxiety?

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, making it hard to focus, relax, or feel in control. My approach to working with anxiety is to help you understand its root causes, develop tools to manage it effectively, and create lasting changes that improve your overall well-being.  What Help Looks Like I use evidence-based strategies tailored to your needs, including: • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns that fuel anxiety. • Mindfulness & Grounding Techniques: Teaching ways to stay present and reduce overthinking. • Exposure Therapy (if appropriate): Gradually facing fears in a safe and controlled way to reduce avoidance behaviors. • Nervous System Regulation: Helping you understand how anxiety affects your body and practicing techniques to calm it, such as breathwork and progressive muscle relaxation. • Practical Coping Strategies: Developing personalized techniques to manage daily stress, panic attacks, or social anxiety. What Clients Should Know • You Are Not Your Anxiety: It doesn’t define you, and it can be managed with the right tools. • Small Changes Make a Big Difference: Learning how to regulate your thoughts and emotions can significantly improve your daily life. • Healing Is a Process: Anxiety may not disappear overnight, but therapy can help you build confidence, resilience, and a greater sense of control. My goal is to empower you with strategies that help you feel calmer, more in control, and able to fully engage in life without anxiety holding you back.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I became a therapist because I believe in the power of healing and transformation. I have always been drawn to understanding human emotions, resilience, and the ways our past experiences shape our present lives. Seeing the profound impact that trauma can have on individuals, I felt a deep calling to help people break free from patterns that no longer serve them and create a life of fulfillment and stability.  What motivates me to continue is witnessing the strength and growth of my clients. Seeing someone reclaim their sense of self, build healthier relationships, and develop tools to navigate life’s challenges is incredibly rewarding. The journey of healing is not always easy, but being a guide and support system for people as they work through their struggles and find hope again keeps me inspired every day. My passion lies in empowering others to rewrite their narratives, recognize their worth, and step into a life that aligns with their true potential.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

If you’re hesitant to try therapy, I completely understand. Opening up about your struggles can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve been taught to handle things on your own or if past experiences have made trust difficult. But therapy isn’t about judgment or weakness—it’s about giving yourself the space to heal, grow, and understand yourself better.  What I wish I could tell you is that therapy is not about fixing you, because you are not broken. It’s about helping you uncover the strength and resilience that already exist within you. It’s a collaborative process where you set the pace, and it’s okay to start small. My advice? Give yourself permission to be curious. You don’t have to commit to long-term therapy right away—just try one session. See how it feels. Therapy is not about having all the answers; it’s about creating a space where you can explore, process, and learn without pressure. And if one therapist doesn’t feel like the right fit, don’t be afraid to try another. You deserve support, and you don’t have to do this alone.

How does eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) work and how can it help?

How EMDR Works and How It Can Help EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and heal from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR helps rewire how traumatic memories are stored in the brain, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing you to move forward without feeling stuck in the past.  How EMDR Works When a person experiences trauma, the brain may not fully process the memory, leaving it “frozen” in an unhealed state. This can lead to distressing symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety, or emotional triggers. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues) to help the brain reprocess these memories, making them feel less overwhelming and reducing their impact on daily life.  How EMDR Can Help • Reduces Emotional Distress: Traumatic memories lose their intensity, helping you feel more in control. • Breaks Negative Thought Patterns: EMDR replaces harmful beliefs (“I am not safe,” “I am powerless”) with healthier, more empowering perspectives. • Helps Manage Anxiety & PTSD Symptoms: Reduces triggers, flashbacks, and emotional reactivity. • Restores a Sense of Safety & Calm: Allows you to engage in life without trauma controlling your thoughts and emotions.  What an EMDR Session Looks Like 1. Preparation & Assessment: We discuss your history, symptoms, and goals to ensure EMDR is a good fit. 2. Identifying Target Memories: We focus on specific distressing memories that are impacting you.  3. Bilateral Stimulation (BLS): I guide you through eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues while you briefly recall the memory, allowing your brain to reprocess it in a more adaptive way. 4. Processing & Shifting Perspectives: As the memory is reprocessed, distressing emotions decrease, and healthier thoughts emerge. 5. Closure & Grounding: We use relaxation techniques to ensure you feel calm and stable before ending the session.  What Clients Should Know • You Stay in Control: EMDR is not hypnosis—you are fully aware and can pause at any time. • Processing Continues Between Sessions: It’s normal to have new insights or emotions arise, and I’ll provide coping tools to help. • Healing Is a Process: Some people feel relief quickly, while others need multiple sessions to fully reprocess complex trauma.  EMDR is a powerful tool for healing, allowing you to release the emotional weight of past experiences and move forward with greater confidence and peace.

How do you work with clients with trauma and PTSD?

How I Work with Clients with Trauma and PTSD When working with trauma and PTSD, my primary focus is creating a safe, supportive environment where you feel in control of your healing process. Trauma impacts the brain and body in ways that can make daily life feel overwhelming, but therapy can help you regain a sense of stability, process painful memories, and build resilience.  What Help Looks Like I use evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs, including: • Trauma-Informed Therapy: Ensuring that sessions feel safe and empowering rather than re-traumatizing. • Somatic Awareness & Regulation: Helping you recognize and manage the ways trauma affects your body (e.g., anxiety, hypervigilance, dissociation). • Cognitive Processing & Reframing: Identifying unhelpful thoughts and beliefs shaped by trauma and replacing them with healthier perspectives. •  EMDR (if applicable) or Exposure Therapy: Gradual, guided processing of traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional intensity. • Building Coping Strategies: Developing tools to manage triggers, flashbacks, and emotional distress in a way that allows you to function more freely in daily life. What Clients Should Know • You Are in Control: We move at your pace—there’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready for. •  Healing Takes Time: Trauma work can be difficult, but it leads to real, lasting change. Small steps matter. • You Are Not Alone: PTSD and trauma responses are normal reactions to overwhelming experiences. Therapy helps you understand and reshape these responses so they no longer control you. The goal of trauma therapy isn’t just to “talk about” the past—it’s to help you feel safer in your own mind and body so you can move forward with strength and confidence.

What do therapy sessions with you look like?

Therapy sessions with me are a safe, judgment-free space where you can show up exactly as you are. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or even hesitant, my goal is to meet you where you are and support you in a way that feels right for you. Our sessions will be collaborative and tailored to your needs. We’ll explore the challenges you’re facing at a pace that feels comfortable, and I’ll provide tools and insights to help you navigate them. You won’t be pressured to share more than you’re ready for, and there’s no “right” way to do therapy—this is your journey, and I’m here to guide and support you.  I use evidence-based approaches to help rewire trauma responses, manage anxiety, and build resilience. But more than that, I focus on creating a connection where you feel seen, heard, and understood. Some sessions may involve deep emotional work, while others may be about finding practical strategies to improve daily life. No matter where you are in your healing process, my priority is to ensure you feel safe, empowered, and in control of your growth.
