About Jennifer

I focus on helping people with chronic pain and chronic illness to regain control over their lives. Chronic pain and illness can take a major toll on the whole person- mood, relationships, work, sleep- the list goes on and on. When it starts to feel like pain or illness are impacting all parts of your life, it can lead to depression, sadness, worry, and loneliness; talking with a therapist who understands both the emotional and physical parts can help. In addition to my work with chronic pain and chronic illness, I also work with people going through the process of cancer treatment and recovery, as well as people with insomnia. I am a Board Certified Clinical Health Psychologist with years of experience helping those with medical conditions AND I myself live with a a chronic illness. My personal connection to this work is what makes me passionate about helping others dealing with pain and illness to live a full, meaningful life even with physical challenges.

What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

CBT is considered to be one of the god-standard treatments for chronic pain, insomnia, and working with people with chronic medical conditions. I am extensively trained in this approach and have been using it with my client's for years. I offer both CBT for chronic pain (CBT-CP), and CBT for insomnia (CBT-I). I also use CBT with clients who have chronic illness or cancer, when it feels appropriate. In addition to CBT, I offer another types of therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (which is similar to CBT, but also more focused on personal values)- I encourage you to message me to lean more about this approach or check out my website.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I grew up with a chronic condition that caused a lot of physical pain. I also had several family members with similar autoimmune and pain conditions. I learned first hand and by watching my family members just how all-encompassing and overwhelming living with a chronic illness or chronic pain condition can be. I also learned that everyone handles it a little differently, and that for some people it can lead to a lot of sadness, worry, fear, depression, and feeling like other people "just don't get it". Unfortunately, there are not a lot of therapists who truly understand the way that living with an illness can impact your mental health and well-being AND who also understand that things like stress and worry can actually make it even harder to manage symptoms of pain and illness. I decided that I needed to do something about this- so I went to graduate school specifically to study Clinical Health Psychology and to learn scientifically backed ways to help support those with pain and illness. I now use both my personal connection and my professional knowledge to help others live their best lives possible.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

It's totally understandable to be a little cautious about starting therapy for the first time (or starting over with a new therapist), especially if you're considering therapy for a chronic medical condition. What I want you to know is that going to therapy does not mean that you're crazy, it does not mean that your pain or illness is "in your head", and it does not mean that you have to go to therapy forever. This type of therapy is to help you live the life that you want! When you work with me, we can go as fast or as slow as you want, and I promise you- not ever sessions has to be super "heavy", sometimes we just work on coping skills.

What's your experience with acceptance and commitment (ACT)?

I have been using ACT for over 10 years. I have been extensively trained in this approach and I now train others in how to use this approach when working with clients who have chronic pain.

How can you provide care remotely?

All of my sessions are done through secure HIPAA compliant video teleconferencing. I think this approach is great because it allows you to fit therapy into your busy life without having to worry about carving out extra time to fight traffic and sit in the waiting room. For my clients with chronic pain or illness, sometimes we do therapy while they are in bed (dressed of course) or in a comfortable chair- this way they can manage their pain or fatigue without having to miss therapy because they aren't feeling their best physically.
