About Kara
Hello! I'm Dr. Kara Kornher, a passionate psychologist with over 25 years of experience in clinical psychology. My journey has led me to specialize in helping individuals and couples enhance their communication and relationships. I believe that by changing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and learning effective communication skills, we can foster healthier connections. Since December 2022, I've been working remotely, collaborating with clients who have private insurance or Medicare. My approach is centered on Compassionate Communication—a model designed to improve understanding and problem-solving within relationships. Previously, I served as a Psychologist and Learning Disabilities Specialist at California State University San Marcos until December 2023. There, I supported students with disabilities by providing necessary accommodations, assessments, and guidance to help them succeed academically. I hold a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree from an APA accredited program and completed my internship at an APA accredited site. My expertise extends to working with college students dealing with mental health challenges, ADHD, and ASD. If you're looking for support to navigate relationship challenges or improve your communication skills, I'm here to help you take those steps towards a more fulfilling life.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I became a therapist because I am fascinated by human behavior and enjoy assisting others in overcoming life's challenges. Seeing the positive impact therapy can have on people's lives inspires me to continue. The ability to learn and grow in my practice keeps me engaged and passionate about my work.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
I wish I could tell them that seeking therapy is a courageous step toward better understanding themselves and finding solutions to their problems. It's normal to be nervous, but therapy provides a safe and nonjudgmental space to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You do not have to face your problems alone. Therapy can offer support, guidance, and new perspectives, resulting in positive change and personal growth.
How can you provide EMDR remotely?
Providing EMDR remotely requires adapting the traditional protocol to virtual sessions via video conferencing platforms. Despite the absence of physical presence, clients are guided through the EMDR process, which includes identifying target memories and using bilateral stimulation techniques. Providing a secure and confidential environment is critical to the effectiveness of remote EMDR sessions.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
Prospective clients should be aware that I have over 25 years of experience in clinical psychology, specializing in improving communication and relationships. My approach is based on Compassionate Communication, which aims to transform unhelpful thoughts and improve understanding within relationships. I have a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree from an APA-accredited program and extensive experience supporting people with mental health issues, ADHD, and ASD, particularly in college settings. In therapy, I provide a safe, empathetic environment tailored to each client's specific needs, combining various techniques to promote positive change and personal growth. Finally, I want to help clients overcome obstacles, improve relationships, and find fulfillment.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
We tailor our therapy sessions to your specific needs and goals. We begin by discussing your goals, and then work together to address your challenges using techniques such as compassionate communication and mindfulness. The sessions are supportive and empathetic, with the goal of building trust and facilitating positive change.
How does couples therapy work and how can it help?
Couples therapy provides a safe environment for partners to discuss issues, improve communication, and strengthen their relationship. Therapists use techniques such as active listening and role-playing to assist couples in resolving conflicts, establishing trust, and increasing intimacy. Finally, couples therapy assists partners in overcoming difficulties and developing a healthier, more fulfilling relationship.
How can you provide care remotely?
I can provide care remotely using teletherapy platforms like video conferencing or phone calls. These platforms allow me to conduct therapy sessions remotely while maintaining the same level of confidentiality and professionalism as in-person sessions. Remote therapy allows me to provide support, guidance, and therapeutic interventions to individuals and couples, addressing a wide range of mental health concerns, relationship issues, and life challenges. I can also provide resources, worksheets, and exercises electronically to supplement therapy sessions and assist clients in between appointments. Overall, remote therapy allows me to connect with clients and provide quality care while remaining convenient and accessible.
How do you work with clients with stress?
When working with clients experiencing stress, I use techniques to identify stressors and explore their impact. I introduce stress management strategies like mindfulness and relaxation techniques, emphasizing self-care and reframing negative thoughts. I provide empathy and support to help clients build resilience and cope effectively with stress.
How do you work with clients with women's issues?
When working with clients dealing with women's issues, I provide a safe and empathetic environment in which to discuss issues such as reproductive health, body image, relationships, and societal expectations. Through dialogue and tailored techniques, I help clients address underlying issues, increase self-awareness, and navigate challenges, resulting in personal growth and fulfillment.
