For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

For individuals needing therapy but could not muster the courage to do so initially, I would tell them I understand how difficult it is to take that first step. Having to seat in front of a total stranger to spill your guts can be very uncomfortable. You may worry about how you are perceived, judged or treated. It is okay to feel nervous or anxious but don't let that stop you from getting the help that you need. It gets better after you take that first step. I have had clients tell me the reasons they were initially hesitant, and wanted to just turn around and leave on day of first appointment. They are happy they didn't as therapy ended up not being everything they dreaded or thought it was based on cultural perceptions.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

A typical session with me begins with first checking in with my client to assess how they are doing emotionally. It is important for me to know the challenges they have been facing prior to meeting with me that day. If it's a returning client, I tend to set aside our agenda for that day so I can be informed of what has changed since we last met. I believe this approach allows the client to feel not only seen, but also heard and cared for. Feedback received from clients also let me know that this method is working as it provides the space for them to focus on what is important to them that day, not the treatment planning or home work given last session. Depending on the nature of feedback provided, we now move forward to the day's agenda if time allows, otherwise it becomes a topic for another day.

How can you provide care remotely?

In my opinion, telehealth has become a blessing in disguise especially during the pandemic. It has provided individuals the opportunity to still get the help they need without having to leave their homes. An example will be an individual suffering from social anxiety where it's difficult for them to be around people. Telehealth provides the starting point for them to work through their concerns until they feel equipped to expose themselves to those environments.

What's your experience with Christian counseling?

I am a faith based counselor who is competent in providing therapy from a biblical perspective if requested by my client. Incorporating spiritual beliefs in treatment of those that requests it empowers them to be able to process important life issues from their faith perspective or belief in a deity. I have been blessed to utilize this process with clients of faith both at the inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities.
