How do you work with clients with anxiety?

A common intervention used with clients experiencing anxiety is CBT (see below). I typically use a combination of CBT and developing new coping strategies, that way the client is getting both short-term and long-term relief.

How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?

CBT is all about looking at the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is a very hands-on therapeutic intervention in that it requires the client and therapist to work together to identify existing cognitive distortions and develop strategies to challenge those thoughts. I think CBT is a very empowering intervention, as it puts the client back in the driver's seat of their own mind.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

As someone who has been in and out of therapy for 16 years, I understand opening up to someone new can feel overwhelming and daunting. It's okay to feel uncomfortable or nervous. Talking about hard things is, well...hard. I'm proud of you, and you can do this!

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

Honestly, there is always something I'm curious about or wanting to discuss, but I let you guide the conversation. It is absolutely okay if you are jumping around topics each week; That is normal when you realize how many areas of your life you want to process. I will help guide those conversations and find common threads in each topic, because there usually is!

How can you provide care remotely?

I really enjoy providing remote therapy sessions because it removes some of the barriers in accessing care (i.e. time, money, transportation). I also feel that it can help the client feel more comfortable sharing in their own environment, rather than having to sit in a stranger's office! My remote services are no different than in-person services. You have my undivided attention!

How do you work with clients with family conflict issues?

Family relationships are, in my opinion, the most complex relationships of all, because there is an element of obligation and, often, guilt, associated with them. An important part of working through family conflict is learning to differentiate between what is yours and what is theirs, and setting and holding boundaries as needed. Therapy is really helpful for this!

How do you work with clients with stress?

Often when we are stressed, the first things to go are our body's basic needs. If our basic needs are not being addressed, it makes it almost impossible to see positive mental health changes, so I always like to start there. Once a client's basic needs are stabilized, we can focus on the specific areas that are causing them stress (e.g. jobs, relationships, etc) and discuss strategies to mitigate it.
