How does couples therapy work and how can it help?
It is a platform where there is safety created and encouraged for each member in the relationship to share their emotional wounds, needs, feelings and find a way that they can learn to lean on each other. In therapy we will help them to get unstuck in the routine and challenge them to make steps forward. If there is unresolved trauma within the relationship we will seek to find a balance. Building awareness and supporting the couple with tools for growth will make the difference in going from survival to safety.
How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?
Utilizing CBT, by identifying Thought, Feelings, and actions to the experience. Client will learn to challenge the unhelpful parts, explore the filters from within the way client has perceived their world view. Building awareness is fundamental in beginning any mental work.
How do you work with clients with anxiety?
Anxiety is often seen in a negative light, however exploring more regulation and challenging unhelpful thoughts is the key. Regulating anxiety and stress in a way that is not a fracture but to find the benefit. We will introduce through psychoeducation when there is underlying anxiety and how to regulate it. It does not have to be debilitating, but managed. Working somatically and mind process will help moving anxiety along in a healthier way.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
When you encompass trauma, and seek support, you don't want to feel like just another number. It takes highly qualified therapist, and much training to just be good enough to support an individual that has already gone through enough. There has to be empathy, and patience as well. The motivating factor is that while a client seeks therapy to feel better, the therapist has to build that safe place unlock the trauma, and even teach the client to learn to sit with that trauma part. The success of the client is My Serenity Mental Wellness's motivating factor.
How do you work with clients with depression?
Looking at depression from the perspective that it has a root and exploring those initial triggers may help us to engage with depression more purposefully. We may teach our clients to listen to the needs of depression, and not only leaning to what psychological needs exist but also being proactive when the client is ready to heal from it.
Why is trauma processing important?
Trauma existed and it cannot be undone, however learning how to create boundaries from thoughts and feelings initially will help with preparing for trauma processing. In this work we will prepare our client to find safety within a window of tolerance. In processing the trauma, a person will be able to give voice to the experience, gain insight, process feelings, and work towards letting go of affecting parts.
How does mindfulness-based therapy (MBCT) work and how can it help?
We take our clients outside of the four walls whenever possible. We may practice from walking or sitting on the grass practicing mindful work to indoor calm breath work. Mindfulness work has helped our clients with becoming more attuned and aware to feelings and senses. This is important in working on listening to self better.
How does trauma focused therapy work and how can it help?
We will work to build clients strengths, to the point that client would know how trauma has affected them and the direction of where the client wants to go next. It is not just on a cognitive level that client will work through but emotional as well.
How do you work with clients with stress?
A stress response is a possible surface response to underlying emotions and triggers. In our experience, we need to find when it's showing up, the environment it lives in, and challenge this part and working through it. If the client is open to integrating techniques and therapy homework we may suggest to help diminish the challenges.
