What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

My primary approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. Often times it ends up being a combination of those as not one approach works for everyone and different challenges respond to different approaches.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I began just wanted to help people but it has become so much more. I see my work as an opportunity and privilege to walk with clients on their journey of meeting whatever goals they seek

What's your experience with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)?

This is an approach often used and assists clients in learning to manage difficult emotions as well as emotional regulation. Emotions can be rather complex and understanding that allows for individuals to develop emotional intelligence. So many live in a world of emotion being anger, sadness, happy, or fear. I often work with clients in really examining emotions as if they were peeling layers of an onion because under their anger for example, may be disappointment or even betrayal which are very different emotions than anger, thus coping with that emotion may be very different. Many of us were not taught the complexity of emotions. I will say even doing this work for as long as I have and understanding the complexity, at times, I find it takes me a bit before the "lightbulb" goes off that I understand the root emotion I am experiencing. Anger is a safe emotion but it is simply an iceberg, where underneath the water is emotions that are much more painful and difficult to face/cope with

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

I think it can be somewhat unsettling to think about sitting with a stranger and sharing intimate details of themselves. I am conscious of that and take the trust placed in my very seriously. I want anyone I meet to feel accepted no matter what they may be facing. I work to build rapport quickly and demonstrate how helpful it can be to anyone. We all face challenges at various times and having an outside person to work through those can be beneficial

Why is trauma processing important?

There are a variety of approaches that are effective in healing from trauma. I think there are many factors to consider with any approach as well as what the trauma involves. Sometimes processing in the way this is asking would require one to "relive" the events as part of the processing. There are other ways in which trauma can be managed with a client have to bring up every painful detail they likely have spent years suppressing. It is so important for therapists to assess the type of trauma as well as supportive factors that clients may have. Understanding how a client can manage "processing" is the first concern. I always insure clients understand and can utilize grounding techniques. Sometimes sessions need to be more than 1x per week for a short time. I think a good analogy is trauma is a wound. A wound that over time has at least scabbed over. When you reopen that wound, you need to be able to open it and get it bandaged back up all in a 50 min session. I always insure that clients have someone who will see if the start to "bleed" through the bandage between sessions as it can be harmful and unsafe to take a client back to a trauma if the can not manage things that may reemerge like flashbacks. There are many other modalities such as EMDR which can be very effective.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

I seek to understand the presenting problems that bring a person to see me but also seek to assist in giving them practical tools that they can apply and use. It is important to understand that my role is not to judge or to even tell you what or how you should address the challenges you are facing. I want to work along side of you in achieving the goals you have

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

First and foremost, please do not feel like you have to come to any session with an agenda as I see that create so much anxiety for people. Its my job to assist and facilitate the dialogue and you will find quickly that it will occur naturally. I believe that this is a collaborative effort and welcome feedback. While I feel I have a good sense of when an intervention is not effective and making necessary adjustments, I try to create a space in which anyone who sees me feels safe and free to share if something is not working. Sessions typically involve questions, dialogue, as well as assisting with the development of the tools you need to meet your goals. There is not one approach that fits all but we will work together to develop a plan that works for you.

How do you work with clients with addiction?

We all know the devastation that can arise from addiction. I think there are many ways in which one can address this issue but the first thing is understanding where they are at in terms of their addiction. Some are able to see the negative impact but not ready to stop. No two people will experience addiction the same way. There are so many different approaches to this problem now versus when I first entered the mental health field. My role is to create a judgment free space in which clients can explore their goals and how to achieve. I believe it is important to assist clients in understanding their addiction, the impact it has had, and having a clear goal in regards to it. The goal of the client will dictate how we approach it. I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse. There is hope

How can you provide care remotely?

The expansion of Telehealth that came from the pandemic we are all still dealing with has also provided more access as clients can connect with you through a secure platform from their home. It removed some of the barriers that clients faced with getting to an office. I continue to seek new and creative ways to use the technology to make treatment as effective as the traditional office setting/visit provided

What's your experience with family or marital Therapy?

I have experience with couples and always have some in my private practice. I also have experience with family therapy as a result of my work with adolescents. These sessions are more structured than lets say an individual session as the structure is needed to allow for productive work to be accomplished. I have and will end a session if one or more people are not able to be respectful to each other and the process. Couples always have some ground rules, basic things I ask which have been born out of experience but again the goal is to assist in healing and not blaming and attacking, which sometimes has been present for a period of time before therapy was sought.

What's your experience with cognitive processing therapy (CPT)?

This is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This approach can be effective in that it is designed to be somewhat time limited, usually around 12 sessions and it is aimed at challenging beliefs relating to trauma providing clients with a new understanding of the events as well as the distressing feelings and emotions surrounding those events. Treatment of any trauma is again not a one size fits all and part of the assessment process will assist in identifying which approach may be most effective

What's your experience with children or adolescents?

I have worked with adolescents dating back to when I was in college for my Bachelor's Degree and have worked with them throughout my career in a variety of capacities. I have consulted and treated adolescents in middle and high school. I have worked in an inpatient program for adolescents dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues and I have worked with them in private practice settings. I have a passion for this population and the many challenges that adolescence brings. The bring challenges that allow me to grow and they teach me so much as well
