About Rory
I have a degree in Social Work with a focus on family systems, sociology and human sexuality. Throughout my career I have worked with people of various backgrounds and with a variety of needs. I have worked with families and within a school setting with middle and high school students. I am looking forward to working with you. My passion has always been to help others with their emotional and mental health needs. I pride myself in being a great listener and by challenging negative thinking and working together, I anticipate successful outcomes and growth in your life!
How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?
CBT is a type of therapy that challenges the way that we are set in how we think and process information. It's especially helpful when dealing with anxiety, depression and stress and challenging the negative loop that our thought processes can get "stuck" in.
How do you work with clients with anxiety?
Working with clients with anxiety is one of my passions. As a person who has anxiety, I feel that I can relate to the physical and mental symptoms that anxiety can cause. I will help challenge negative thoughts, help process these, discuss successful, evidence based calming and coping strategies and give "homework" to help with managing anxiety.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
After having my first child in 2016 and then the pandemic occurring, I found the importance of mental health services and providing those services especially to new moms/parents experiencing mental health needs as a result of parenthood and the trauma that everyone has experienced as part of living through a pandemic.
How do you work with clients with depression?
I am passionate about working with clients to help them cope with and address their depression. Exploring their past traumas and family history is a vital component to this. It's further important to normalize that, with depression, you can't just "snap out of it" and that their feelings are valid.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Taking the first step to getting therapy can be intimidating, scary, and may hold a negative stigma from those around you, however, seeking and participating in therapy is a strength that you've recognized a need for personal growth and want to better yourself. That's something to be proud of and embrace it. One of the nicest things about therapy is being able to share with someone all of your deepest feelings and knowing you can share without judgement.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I am a mother and a wife. I understand that everyone's life experiences are different and I like to normalize the stressors of parenthood and day to day life. I am realistic and supportive. I like to provide examples from my own life and my own struggles to help normalize and explain how to get through the difficult times and that laughter and acceptance makes it a bit easier.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
All sessions with me are virtual, from the comfort of your own home, job, car, or wherever you are most comfortable. The session is yours and I want you to take the lead but I will help get the difficult topics going through asking questions and providing feedback. Nothing that you will say to me will shock me and I will not judge you for anything you share with me. I want you to feel safe, supported and after the session I want you to feel that a weight has been lifted a bit.
How can you provide care remotely?
I believe that remote care is the safest, most comfortable way to provide care. You are able to be in the comfort of the space you choose and it allows the therapist/client interaction to be more casual and laid back and not feeling like you're in a doctor's office setting.
How do you work with clients with stress?
I enjoy supporting clients who are struggling with stressors in life. Stress is a part of everyone's life and it's important to normalize asking for help and prioritizing tasks to address stress.
