What's your experience with clients with anxiety?
My experience with clients struggling with anxiety and panic is great. I start by focusing on the client and learning about their triggers. Triggers usually precede anxiety and panic. Next, we deal with the triggers themselves - how to recognize and deal with them. Eventually, once the causes or triggers are minimalized, the anxiety and panic also decrease.
What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
I have years of experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is the foundational method I use for motivational interviewing and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). Our thoughts control our actions, which lead to our actions (good or bad) and result in consequences. To change our life's consequences we learn how to alter our thought processes, which alter our actions, which lead to more optimal consequences.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
There have been time periods in my life when I felt stuck and unsure how to proceed next. I decided to become a therapist so that I could help others with their life challenges and what the clients perceive to be obstacles. Each client has specific needs that usually require some type of change. This change must be livable for the client for the change to be effective. I can help clients choose their change before change chooses them.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Human beings are social beings. There are events in one's life when the person does not know which way to go. Why not talk to a professional therapist who is ethical, educated, and able to help? How does a person know until they try? There is no obligation to stay in therapy if you do not want to. This professional relationship is volutary.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I am a natural optimist but I am also a realist. The client must understand they must make some hard decisions and may have to embrace new ideas in the counseling process. The therapist supplies the tools, the client supplies the outcome.
What's your experience with acceptance and commitment (ACT)?
I find Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to be very useful. ACT allows the client to control what they are able to control in their environment. It takes practice. Once the acceptance phase is completed then the commitment phase begins. The client uses ACT to counteract what they thought were unmanageable situations in the past.
What does a typical session with you tend to look like?
The typical session with me would be a 50-minute session where I focus specifically on you and your issues. We will talk about various ways of accomplishing goals for you with a treatment plan we devise together.
How do you work with clients with addiction?
I use an existential approach when treating clients with addiction. I provide a treatment plan utilizing Solution-Focused Therapy. When the desire to stay sober outweighs the desire to get high - that is when recovery starts.
What's your experience with relationship counseling?
I do not currently have experience with couples. I do have experience with individuals who have relationship issues.
How can you provide care remotely?
As an Associate Licensed Counselor with the State of Alabama, I can legally provide telehealth counseling (via the internet) only within the State of Alabama. So, if you are a resident of Alabama? I can provide remote counseling.
What's your experience with family or marital Therapy?
Currently, I do not perform family or marital therapy.
What's your experience with children or adolescents?
I currently only work with adults who are 18 years and older.
