About Shonta

Shonta Williams received her MSW from the University of Georgia. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with over 18 years of experience working with adolescents, individuals, couples and families on issues of anxiety, anger management, depression, self-esteem, and life transitions such as divorce, parenting, co-parenting, and grief. I work to create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to process their thoughts and emotions and create healthy coping skills and healthy connections with others. My therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based(MBCT), Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Brief (SFBT). How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?

With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the therapist helps the client to identify negative patterns in thinking and challenge the negative thinking in an effort to create improved mood and quality of life.

How do you work with clients with anxiety?

For clients with anxiety, we process their current worries and I mainly teach clients distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills per session.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I became a therapist because I am compassionate about helping others. When others tell me that I have helped them it motivates me to keep going and gives me a sense of purpose. I am honored to hold space for others during difficult times of life transition.

How do you work with clients with depression?

I work with clients on improving their world view/view of self to reduce reduction in depressive symptoms as well have help clients gains relief from traumatic experience through reframing or changing their narrative story to help decrease suffering from repeating or ruminating on situations that they cannot change.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Therapy does not mean that something is wrong with you, therapy serves to help clients find clarity in areas of your life, it's to help you work through complex emotions and traumatic experiences. In you therapy you will learn to challenge negative thinking and develop new techniques to cope with difficult situations. It's also a space to focus on personal growth.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

I will not judge clients, I am here to hold space, help others gain clarity over their situations, break negative patterns and develop healthy coping skills and a healthier outlook on life.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

A typical session with me is building rapport with the client, by first discussing what conflict or presenting issue led the client to therapy, then processing at the client's level of comfort, to help the client gain clarity. Together with the client, we will develop a treatment plan for change or acceptance.

How do you work with clients with relationship issues?

I help clients with relationship issues, by exploring the dynamics of their relationship that is currently hindering them from a healthy relationship. We then work on healthy communication strategies, building trust, and conflict resolution skills to improve the over all satisfaction in the relationship.

How can you provide care remotely?

I provide therapy through the Simple Practice Platform. For clients who have insurance, please use my headway link for insurance and payment processing.

How do you work with clients with stress?

I help clients gain understanding into their areas of difficulty/stress, identify the origins and create healthy boundaries to create balance and improved outcomes.
