Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
Growing up, I always had a passion for helping others and knew that I would end up being in the helping professions someday. Through volunteer experience during my teenage and adult years, I grew to understand that the hands-on work that really needed to be done in our communities was through the mental health field. I obtained my bachelor’s in psychology from UC-Riverside and then pursued and obtained my master’s in social work from Cal State Fullerton. Working in the community mental health field for five years shaped me to be the therapist I am today. While working with low-income families in South LA, my understanding of trauma evolved drastically and shaped me as a therapist. I strive to work with people on their current behaviors and struggles by exploring their childhood, looking at core beliefs, and understanding past traumas that still affect them today.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I am very flexible in my sessions and have an easy-going personality. I make sure to meet my client where they are in the moment and explore what is on their mind for that session. I ask a lot of reflective questions to challenge my client to work on themselves. I provide homework, such as goals to work on in the week or things to write down. I recommend books often (if the client likes to read). I like working with motivated clients who can be honest and stay true to themselves in sessions.
How can you provide care remotely?
I am very excited that telehealth has grown so much. I believe that telehealth opens doors for many people who previously did not have as much access to services. In the busy society we live in, people can now make time to receive professional help without compromising their work or social lives. I can truly meet my clients wherever and whenever, even if it means a client meeting me via video on their lunch break.
