How do you work with clients with anxiety?

The first thing I like to do with my clients presenting with anxiety is to try to understand the nature of their anxiety (e.g., triggers, responses to triggers, and how they cope). Then, I try to learn what does and does not work for them in coping with their anxiety. I like to provide my clients with easy coping tools from the very first session so that they feel empowered and some relief at the end of the first session.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

When it comes to therapy, my favorite part is that your therapist is someone who does not know anything about you or your life other than what you share with them. They do not have an emotional connection to your life or your choices in the way that family and friends do, so they are often a safe space to share thoughts, feelings, and concerns without the fear of disappointing someone, worrying them, or hurting their feelings. A therapist is meant to hold up a mirror to you and help you work toward what you want to see in your reflection.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

As a therapist, I usually like to allow my clients to dictate the material covered in the session, particularly if there is something pressing they would like to discuss. I ask many questions in an attempt to understand my client's point of view as best as possible, and also to help my client consider alternative perspectives than their own.
