How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?

I utilize CBT quite often in treatment. CBT, more simply explained, is taking a hard look at the core of an issue and working to change how you perceive it, so you are better equipped to deal with it more effectively.

How do you work with clients with anxiety?

Anxiety can be particularly difficult to manage. When working with people experiencing anxiety, I help them develop new coping skills as well as explore the root causes of their anxiety.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

My decision to become a therapist began in 2012 after my own personal struggle with mental health.

How do you work with clients with depression?

Depression can range from minor to debilitating, depending on the person. I try to help my clients explore explore their feelings and emotions to discover what’s at the heart of their depression. Then I work together with them to process these feelings and emotions to reduce the negative impact they are having on their mental health.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

It really does help to talk to someone else about your struggles with mental health. The first step is ALWAYS the hardest, but it does get easier after that, and it is most definitely worth it.

What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?

I would like people to know that I am an extremely compassionate, empathetic, nonjudgmental person. I am also extremely committed to helping my clients make positive changes in their lives.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

In a typical session we will catch up on what has happened between sessions, however, we are not going to just chitchat. We are also there to work on issues, so we are going to tackle the things in your life that you are struggling with as well.

How do you work with clients with relationship issues?

When working on relationships, I work with each person to understand their perspective, and then, help them see the situation from their partner’s point of view. Effective communication, conflict resolution skills, and commitment to change are all key components to successfully improving relationships.

How do you work with clients with stress?

Stress can be very difficult to manage. I like to really analyze my client’s sources/triggers of stress, then, look for ways to avoid these triggers or at least cope with them more effectively.
