What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?
I have integrated CBT into my practice regularly since becoming licensed. CBT can be extremely effective in working with clients who struggle with anxiety and depression. When using CBT, I collaborate with clients to determine the direction of the therapeutic process and identify errors in their thinking. After identifying those errors, clients learn how to begin challenging automatic thoughts that they have developed over time. It's almost like teaching the client to be their own therapist by helping them learn how to identify the errors in thinking. In turn, the client practices challenging those thinking errors inside and outside of session. In addition to helping clients learn how to challenge their thoughts, I also assist them in learning how to change their behaviors in response to their triggers. The foundation of CBT is that dysfunctional thinking underlies all emotion and behaviors. If clients can change their thinking and behavior, they by default change their relationship with their emotions.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
Since I was a young girl, I desired to help others. Others would often confide in me and I was often told that I have a soft heart. When I was growing up, a soft heart was viewed as a weakness and being too sensitive. I have since learned that the sensitivity that I have is by design and it’s a superpower. As I matured, I continued to be empathetic towards others and desired to help others navigate life’s obstacles. Years later I decided to embrace my gifs and my purpose unapologetically. With this sensitivity I use an eclectic approach tailored to the client’s specific needs. I have always had a heart for people. Since a young child I would listen to other problems and try to help them. Later in life, I realized that my connection to others was indeed a gift. Watching others face obstacles, make needed adjustments, and embrace change in order to heal is what continues to inspire and motivate me to do this work.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
Just Try it. Therapy is just like anything else that is new. New things are unfamiliar. It is very normal to feel hesitant about a new experience especially if you are not used to being vulnerable. Challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and give it a try. If you try it and do not like it and are unable to work through the discomfort, you may not be ready just yet and that's okay. Grant yourself some grace in making the decision, commit to at least three sessions, and then make a decision about whether or not to continue. You even can talk about your hesitancy about therapy in therapy. Don't deprive yourself of the opportunity to possibly feel better because of fear.
