Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
Over the years, I have been asked this question quite a few times. I knew I wanted to be in the helping professions from the time I was in seventh grade. I didn't know exactly how, but I knew I was going to be in the field from the moment I took my first psychology. I just remember being so fascinated by what was taught. That was twenty-seven years ago! Today, as a therapist, I am still fascinated by what I do. I love helping people. I am motivated on a daily basis by watching my clients learn, improve and change their thinking and make better choices to improve the quality of their lives. It is so rewarding to watch people lift themselves up and begin to live the life they deserve. I've always said, this is the only thing I can imagine ever doing with my life. It is my calling.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
So, so many things! Firstly, please disregard almost everything you've ever seen or heard on tv about therapy. Therapy is a joint effort between a therapist and the client to identify problematic thinking, feelings and behaviors and learn ways to make things better. There are as many ways to do that as there are therapists and you must find a therapist you like, otherwise, it will not work. You will get what you put into therapy, so if you work hard, try new things (which can be very uncomfortable sometimes) and remain open-minded, you will improve. Therapy takes time, so don't expect a quick fix. I truly believe therapy works and people can recover. That's why my business is called "Recovery Works." It also has that name because a person needs to work at their recovery. As a therapist, I believe it is important to work WITH my client to identify goals and take steps to achieve them. I do not work ON my clients to change them into what I think they "should" be. Please, don't expect your therapy to be a quick fix if you are trying to correct a long-standing issues. Please be patient with yourself during the process and know that not all days will be great, but you will make progress as time goes by if you use what you've learned in session and practice in the real world.
