About Vanessa
Hello! I work with adults ready to address old patterns or new changes that are becoming challenging to live with. This might be anxiety, lower mood, loss, or life transitions, such as pregnancy, parenting, separations, career shifts, or simply wanting to focus on your own wellbeing.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I took an Intro to Psychology class in 10th grade and was sold on the idea of entering the psychology field. I was one of many teenagers that felt I had no one to talk to and decided I wanted to become the person I wish I had back then. Someone who accepted me as I was, did not judge me, supported me, and believed in me. While I am now trained in addressing a variety of clinical concerns using evidence based interventions, I continue to strive and create this environment for anyone I work with. I believe the therapeutic relationship remains the most important factor.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
I hear you! Therapy takes guts. You are essentially considering bringing your concerns to someone you don't know, but hope that they can help somehow. Maybe you don't believe you can be helped, but something has to change because what is happening now is not working for you. Going to therapy is similar to taking a leap of faith, but for your own well-being. While I cannot guarantee any outcomes from therapy and I certainly never aspire to be the perfect fit for everyone, I can assure you that you will be heard, respected, and supported in creating meaningful change in your life.
How does acceptance and commitment (ACT) work and how can it help?
ACT is all about learning ways to manage and co-exist alongside loud thinking or intense feelings, memories, urges, etc. It is not so much about changing, challenging, or "fixing" what is happening within you; rather, we figure out how you can continue living your life in ways that matter to you while these tough moments pass. How do we identify what matters to you? Values! We will spend lots of time discussing what your values are and what values-based actions look like for you.
