How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
When working with clients experiencing OCD, I begin with a thorough assessment to understand the nature of the obsessions, compulsions, and how symptoms are affecting daily life. Together, we develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses both symptom management and overall quality of life. My approach is grounded in evidence-based care and may include medication management, psychoeducation, and coordination with therapists who provide specialized treatments such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is considered the gold standard therapy for OCD. I help clients understand how OCD operates, monitor treatment progress, and adjust interventions as needed. Throughout the process, I strive to create a supportive and collaborative environment where clients feel understood, informed, and empowered to regain control over their lives and reduce the impact of OCD symptoms.
Noah Freiburger is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Brain Injury Specialist. How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
I work with clients with OCD by first completing a thorough psychiatric evaluation to understand their symptoms, triggers, compulsions, anxiety patterns, and how OCD is affecting daily life. From there, I create a personalized treatment plan that may include medication management, supportive care, coping strategies, and collaboration with therapy when needed. My goal is to help clients reduce distress, improve emotional balance, and feel more in control while moving at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
I worked as a board-certified psychiatric nurse with adults for 15 years in various settings before becoming a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). In 2024, I completed my Doctorate in Nursing Practice and received my NP104 for Independent Practice as a PMHNP in February 2026. My experience as an RN includes working in adult psychiatric inpatient units, emergency rooms, and electroconvulsive therapy departments in several major healthcare facilities in the Los Angeles area, including Cedars Sinai, UCLA, Huntington Hospital, and Glendale Adventist Medical Center. As a PMHNP-BC, I worked for Tarzana Treatment Centers and outpatient psychiatric practices. In our first session together, we will start with introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you are facing. We will work towards establishing some short-term and long-term goals for treatment and treatment outcomes. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
When working with OCD, I take time to separate true obsessive compulsive symptoms from anxiety or perfectionism since they are often confused. I listen carefully to your history and tailor treatment to your exact pattern of symptoms. Medications like SSRIs can be very effective, but I prescribe carefully, explain the science behind them, and make sure you know why I am recommending them. I also emphasize the importance of therapy, since the best outcomes often come from combining both. My role is to educate, guide, and support you with full transparency so you are never left wondering why we are doing something.
