How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a skills-based approach that helps individuals better manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and cope with stress in healthier ways. DBT focuses on four core skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through these skills, clients learn how to stay present during difficult moments, navigate emotional challenges without becoming overwhelmed, communicate more effectively, and respond to life's stressors with greater balance and confidence. DBT can be especially helpful for individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, emotional reactivity, self-destructive behaviors, relationship difficulties, or feeling overwhelmed by their emotions.
At TellMel Mental Health, we understand that anxiety, depression, stress, focus difficulties, and overwhelming emotions can make everyday life feel much harder than it should. Many of our clients are doing everything they can to manage responsibilities at work, school, home, or in relationships, yet still find themselves feeling stuck, exhausted, or disconnected from the life they want. Our approach starts by meeting you where you are, understanding your unique experiences, and creating a personalized treatment plan that may include therapy, medication management, or both. Together, we focus on helping you build practical skills, improve emotional well-being, and move toward a more balanced, fulfilling life.

How do you work with clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?
When treating OCD I use both exposure and response prevention (ERP) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). We will identify the core fears surrounding your thoughts. These core fears are what drive us to perform compulsive behaviors and can hold us hostage. With OCD, there is no negotiating with it, it will try to explain away any rationale we give it. Therefore, the most widely used treatment for OCD is exposure techniques. These will be done at your comfort level and will be individualized to your fears and struggles. As we face exposures together, this will create habituation, meaning the feelings of distress will lessen over time. We must also work on the response prevention part and this is where ACT comes in. With ACT we recognize the thoughts we are having, what they are telling us to do, and learn to sit with them. By sitting with our thoughts and feelings instead of acting on them this allows the exposure activities to work better, and decreases the anxiety and depression we feel from OCD.
Like the name of my practice, I believe individuals are also capable of blooming throughout even the most difficult of circumstances. I specialize in working with adults struggling with anxiety, OCD, depression, and trauma. This can appear as feelings of guilt, feeling like you're dragging through life, future tripping, or thoughts taking up residence in your mind rent free. During our sessions together we will work towards achieving your goals. This process will allow you to decompress from life’s daily struggles while learning skills to find your peace and happiness. As a therapist it is my goal to help individuals have a better understanding of themselves, process past pain, and feel confident in moving through life. Feel free to reach out to schedule a free consultation by visiting my website or by calling me. I look forward to seeing you embrace life as you want it.
