“A span of life is nothing. But the man who lives that span, he is something. He can fill that tiny span with meaning, so its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be insignificant.” – Chaim Potok, The Chosen “Every time we ask a question, we’re generating a possible version of a life.” – David Epston  Hi! I’m Jaime, and I’m honored to make your acquaintance. I am currently a graduate student in the Master of Arts Marriage and Family Therapy Program at National University. I am working under the supervision of Rosa Montoya, LMFT#115495. I have experience working with school-aged children in academic settings as an instructional assistant for special education. Additionally, as an MFT trainee, I have had the privilege of collaborating with children and teens who have experienced bullying and abuse to explore preferred identities. I also have a variety of lived experiences that have expanded my ability to question my assumptions, listen empathetically, and be curious. My life has been one in search for meaning. When I was younger, I thought that meaning came from the answers to life’s difficult questions like “What does my suffering say about me?”, “Who am I?”, and “How do I make a difference?” – and I searched for answers in many contexts, including spirituality, creative writing, art, music, and literature. My personal search for meaning and answers led me to volunteer for disaster relief in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami; while I was in Japan, I encountered what it was like to live in another culture and respect and value other ways of being. Since that experience, I have found that questions – not answers – hold a universe of possibilities and allow meaning to grow, change, and become with me. As a narrative therapist-in-training, I am passionate about exploring with you all the rich possibilities of becoming. I see life as a journey whose paths, detours, fellow travelers, luggage, and destinations are yours to choose, define, and relate to in ways that reflect your values and the meaning you wish to create. I hope to collaborate with you in questioning constrained descriptions of life to create more space for you to reauthor, explore, and discover new possibilities of being and becoming. It would be my honor to join with you in elevating and privileging your voice, experiences, knowledge, preferred meaning, and values in our conversations together. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. I look forward to joining with you on your journey!

I did not choose the career of counseling. It chose me. At the age of 13, I was going through anxiety and depression. I had no idea of how to navigate through life or how to handle my emotions. It was through the guidance of my middle school guidance counselor Donna Clark that I was introduced to counseling. 14 years later I followed in her footsteps and became a counselor. I am thankful to her for influencing me in my young life. It is because of her impact on my life that I seek to provide the same level of care and passion for every client I am blessed to work with.  My own personal journey is the basis of my understanding of anxiety and depression and what is necessary to heal from these feelings. Through studying the roots of my pain, practicing techniques, and learning to embrace who I am I learned that this direct experience can help me to become a more empathetic counselor.  Although I am skilled in many topics some of my favorite areas to counsel in are how to manage anxiety, depression, BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) issues , microagressions, those living with a disability, women issues, work stress, school stress, and grief. In addition, I enjoy working with my clients on goal setting, career planning, and addressing life stressors that comes up for them. I have worked with clients ages 12-65.  Listed below are my qualifications:  -Licensed Professional Counselor  -Tele-therapy Certification  -Grief Therapy Certification  -Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Certification  -American Counseling Association member since 2010  -Experienced Substance Disorder and Emotion Regulation ProvideR
