Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
As a kid and teen I desperately needed someone to talk to, someone to process my experiences with, and someone safe to discuss the traumas I was dealing with. Unfortunately, I grew up in a home that didn't value mental health help and I didn't get the healing care I needed until I was a young adult. When I finally got the healing care I needed I had a new passion for life and could appreciate my resilience. After doing my own work on my journey I knew my purpose was to then help others on their paths. I feel so lucky to be a therapist and to be able to provide support to those who need it and are hurting.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
It's so normal to be a little worried about starting therapy! The concept of therapy in itself can be kind of strange. For much of our lives we're told not to talk to "strangers" and we're encouraged to keep things to ourselves which goes against the grain of therapy. If you're thinking about starting this journey I'd encourage you to give yourself grace, use humor and find someone whose personality is a good fit for you. The number one key to therapeutic success is connection and relationship. Try a few therapists and a few styles, but don't give up on yourself, you deserve more than this.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
Humor is important to me, I believe laughter can be a cure for a lot of things and I tend to incorporate this into my therapy style. Sometimes my sense of humor is dark and sometimes it's cheery. I also believe that clients are the experts on themselves and my role as a therapist is often to just help guide and support. I feel passionately about encouraging the existing strengths that you already have inside you. As a therapist, I believe the key to therapeutic success is in the relationship between the therapist and the client so I put much emphasis on building connection and relationship to my clients.
