About Omarpreet

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and owner of Family Matters Behavioral Health Services (FMBHS) with 12 + years of experience in the mental health field. My clients come in with varied concerns- parenting challenges, infidelity in marriage, coping with psychological disorders and seek to enhance resiliency, to be able to overcome obstacles through application of skills that they learn in their therapeutic process with me. I offer specialized services for children and parents/caretakers that are fighting behavioral and emotional problems. They move through their therapeutic journey empowering themselves with the ability to navigate through life challenges. To accommodate busy families I offer evening and Saturday appointments so you don't have to worry about your children missing school. Together we'll create a customized plan to get your child back on track.

What is your experience with clients with family conflict issues?

Family issues exist in the everyday functioning of the family system as a whole. While one person may be considered to be "the one with problems" the entire family system somehow plays a role in maintaining the issue(s). I work on strengthening the family system to help families recognize where the real problem is (instead of them fishing around for/or guess-gaming/mis-targeting the problem) so that they can pour in their energies and resources towards the real target- not a person in the family, but the REAL problem.

What's your experience with children or adolescents?

Children and adolescents cannot navigate their way through therapy in isolation. Parents/caretakers/teachers have to be a vital part of their therapeutic journey if you want to see effective and lasting results. Your child is exhibiting concerns because beneath the seemingly stubborn surface of defiance, anger, distancing, isolating, low self-esteem, and such is the root of the problem. Children are good at masking their problems with behaviors that can be exasperating to deal with for parents/caretakers. Through therapy, you will learn how to cope with these behavioral/emotional challenges your family is experiencing so you can help your child overcome the problems that are pestering him/her.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

The strong belief that every human being has a deep rooted potential to prosper and grow from within and live a life of peace and joy. Each person has the ability to overcome obstacles. This ability only needs to be nudged and channeled in the right direction with care and compassion.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

I once told a client that was resistant to therapy- "I understand that therapy is the last option on your list. I welcome you to try every other single option. You are entitled to it. But if you exhaust all your options and still feel that the same problem is staring at you, I know you will give therapy your very best shot. I promise you it won't be easy.... but you will watch yourself succeed."

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

My sessions are a reflection of my approach towards life- "Smile and walk your path. If the road gets too bumpy, smile broader because the next obstacle is going to make you stronger than you ever were". I promise you- you will find me as real as it gets! I work with compassion, empathy, humor and warmth, but do not sugar-coat what you need to see and understand. I take my work seriously which instills in me a duty to work in the best interest of my client(s). You will find a blend of humor, reflection on your experiences, genuine responses to your queries, honest questions about your progress, and a celebration of your victories in my sessions!

How do you work with clients with addiction?

I bring the client and the family together as a team to fight against addiction. When my clients have reliable support systems backing them, they experience a more effective improvement in their symptoms. I approach my clients with compassion and with a willingness to listen and validate the hurt and trauma beneath addictive behaviors which helps them see themselves as separate from addiction and view addiction as a disorder that is outside of them- not a part of them. Educating the client and the family is the next important step plus validating the hurt and the struggle that they are going through due to addiction.

What's your experience with clients with ADHD?

In the case of teenagers- participation of parents/caretakers is vital. For the attention-building and behavioral aspect- I work more with parents and teachers. Children need consistent guidance and leadership from their parents/caretakers. If the grown-ups can come together as an effective team for their children and persevere and persist to help their child succeed, there is no way that the child won't! I work with the teenager on individual attention-building skills and enhancing their self-esteem to help them match the energy that their grown-ups are showing to achieve the treatment goals.
