About Rachael
I believe therapy is an adventure of self-discovery—an opportunity to explore your story and uncover your strengths. My approach is collaborative and adaptive, drawing from CBT, ACT, DBT, SFBT, and Person-Centered Therapy, as well as Geek Therapy and the Hero’s Journey framework when it fits your interests. Whether you connect through fandoms like anime, video games, or tabletop RPGs, or prefer a more traditional approach, I meet you where you are. Together, we’ll navigate your challenges, build insight, and move toward a renewed sense of balance and purpose. Every hero’s journey is unique. I look forward to walking beside you as we navigate yours together.
How does cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work and how can it help?
Often times, how we look at things impacts how we respond to them. Seen Never Ending Story? Remember the Horse (Artax)? Yeah. I am here to get you out of the Swamp of Sadness. First you have to start changing your thought process. If you don't change the way you think about something, then you are going to continue to feel the way you feel which of course means the behaviors don't change. Artax didn't stop thinking the sad thoughts and sank (spoiler alert for those who weren't traumatized by this movie as children). The CBT triangle is something I often call upon as a visual in this journey. If you want to change how you feel, look at your behaviors and thoughts. Change your thoughts? Let's change some behavior with Behavioral Activation. Which (you probably guessed it) means your emotions are changed too.
Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?
I became a therapist because I wanted to help others tackle life's challenges and see their own strengths. I continue working as I believe everyone's therapeutic journey is different and there is so many more people to help. I also wanted to bring something fresh to field and incorporate the use of geek therapy in sessions by pulling from geek culture as a mythological artifact. Take any faction of the pop culture world. Bring it to your mind. There are interesting characters with engaging and completing story lines that weave together to create it's own story web. We can then separate out the lessons they teach: friendship, resiliency, family connections, saving the world, becoming a personal hero, dealing with loss, grief, depression…the lessons buried or contained in these pop culture artifacts can connect in a multitude of ways to teach important life lessons. And these lessons are delivered through characters with whom we can feel connected.
How do you work with clients with depression?
Firstly, we are gonna acknowledge the dark cloud. It's here AND that doesn't mean that we have to stay under it. Employing the use of self compassion, ACT and CBT we will work to move you from under the dark cloud or at the very least get you an Umbrella.
For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?
If you have thought about it, chances are there is a reason. Help is the bravest thing you can say, and it's refusing to give up. Let us help carry your load while you're here with us. Lastly, what you resist tends to persist. Lets meet it together.
What should people thinking about working with you, know about you?
I am caring, compassionate and very nerdy. I will be direct and offer you challenges and encouragements along the path of your therapeutic journey. Think of me as your mentor along for a portion of your own personal hero's journey.
What do therapy sessions with you look like?
Therapy with me is meant to feel collaborative and an open space for you to come and show up as you are. I am here to hold the space with you, and should it call for it, pull in some humor and challenge you for your continued growth.
