How does couples therapy work and how can it help?

Attempt to be fair to both parties. Assuring they are listening to the other especially if they don't agree. Alot of time is focused on rekindling the relationship by teaching relationship skills such as communication, conflict resolution, mutual respect and trust.

Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

I thrive on the opportunity to help persons recognize their worth and value in life. I tried other professions previously, all which involved a component of counseling. Learned I most excelled and was energized when helping persons deal with real life situations in a counseling setting.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Therapy is about what you need to talk about. It is designed to help you address real life situations in a way that helps reconcile relationships on various levels. You control the session, not the therapist.

What do therapy sessions with you look like?

Begin with building rapport with the clients. Then begin to identify key issues that may be ready to address in therapy. Sessions are normally 60 minutes in length, although family and group sessions could be up to 90 minutes. My role is to suggest alternative ways to dealing with the issue(s) that brings the client into treatment, and allowing them to decide if they want to try a new way of thinking and/or behaving.
