Why did you become a therapist, and what motivates you to continue?

Being surrounded by some of the most elite level athletes in the world taught me that what we see on the outside doesn't always match what is on the inside. And for people who are "high-functioning," - meaning that they can hold down jobs, get promotions, train for marathons, manage teams - it can be a lot harder to find people who recognize that you can be suffering, too. Many people fall through the cracks in the mental health system because they seem to be too "well" to need help. After years of seeing this, I decided to become a mental health counselor so that I could provide services to people who don't "need"traditional therapy and would probably survive, but not thrive. People who know that something inside them feels "off" or wrong, but can't tell anyone because on the outside everything seems okay. I'm here for them and will continue to be here for them because they matter just as much as people who appear to need it more.

What's your experience with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a great modality and has helped millions of people reach their goals. I use basic CBT to help clients start to recognize their thought patterns and choose how to reframe them for the better. It’s great for problem solving. If someone is dealing with deep rooted issues, CBT isn’t the best tool. So there are times when I choose other ways to help. But overall, CBT is an excellent resource and I’m happy to use it with clients who want to change their mindsets.

For people that are hesitant to try therapy, what do you wish you could tell them?

Of course you're hesitant to try something new! You may have heard horror stories about how awful some therapists can be (I certainly have) or you may be worried that you're not "unwell" enough for therapy. Those feelings are all normal. I offer a free 30 minute consultation where you can ask me questions and find out more about what therapy with me is like. And if you don't think it's a good fit, let me know and I'll happily recommend other therapists who may be what you're looking for. Hesitation is always okay, but don't let that fear stop you from becoming your best self. Reach out to someone today.

Why is trauma processing important?

Turning post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth is the most amazing thing that a trauma survivor can do. The ways that trauma impacts the brain - particularly when it occurs in childhood - are complex and sometimes subtle. Understanding how trauma restructures the brain and then reprocessing and repairing that structure is life-changing for people who have survived trauma. You don’t deserve to live this way. It wasn’t your fault. You deserve to be healthy and to use the resilience that has gotten you this far to help you fully heal.

What does a typical session with you tend to look like?

I want to learn about you! Who you are. What makes you tick. What makes you different from everyone else. You’ll get to share your thoughts and feelings, and then learn more about the neuroscience behind those thoughts and feelings. We will use your expertise and mine to develop new skills and new approaches to life. And if those skills don’t work for you, we will find something that does.

How can you provide care remotely?

During COVID-19 my practice switched to being entirely online. While teletherapy isn’t for everyone, it is an amazing tool for people with time constraints, people who don’t have reliable transportation, and people who have busy schedules. In my experience, tremendous growth can be had in the virtual therapy room. If telehealth is something you’re interested in, I encourage you to give it a try!
