Do you feel weighed down by trauma, anxiety, OCD, or depression that makes it hard to enjoy life, relationships, or even day-to-day routines? Many people come to counseling hoping to understand their past, regulate emotions, and find relief from patterns that continue to shape their lives. You’re not alone, and healing is possible. Taking the first step can feel intimidating, but it is also a courageous move toward meaningful change. My goal is to help clients feel more grounded, confident, and in control of their lives. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), working with individuals, young adults, couples, and families. Many mental health challenges stem from unprocessed pain rooted in earlier life experiences. Through structured guidance and compassionate support, I help clients uncover root causes, build self-awareness, and develop skills that foster resilience, healthier patterns, and stronger relationships. Therapy is always collaborative and tailored to your goals, circumstances, and strengths. I utilize carefully selected, evidence-based approaches, including Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT), Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), and a value-based approach. My style blends clarity, structure, and practical tools with warmth, collaboration, and deep person-centered care. Whether you’re facing intrusive thoughts, grief, identity concerns, relationship challenges, or life transitions, therapy is about more than coping—it’s about building insight, confidence, and lasting change.

How do you work with clients with relationship issues?
Working with clients who have relationship issues can be challenging because relationships are complex and unique to each individual. I understand that relationships can bring both happiness and sadness, and there is no one right way to approach them. Sometimes, it may be necessary to end a difficult relationship, while at other times, finding new ways to interact with the person can lead to personal growth and improvement in the relationship. I will work with you to identify your thoughts, values, and desires to help you make decisions that work best for you. If needed, we can also engage in relational skills training. It's important to remember that even with the best communication skills, conversations can still be difficult and hurtful. My approach is tailored to your specific needs, and I will support you in finding ways to navigate your relationships in a way that is authentic and comfortable for you.
You are exhausted from constantly holding things together, even when everything inside is falling apart. You're overwhelmed by stress, disconnected from your relationships, and questioning beliefs that once felt certain. These struggles can leave you anxious, burnt out, and unsure of who you are or what comes next. That’s where reaching out to a professional can help. Dr. Dominic Schmuck is a licensed psychologist with over a decade of experience helping adults through life transitions, relationship trauma, and religious shifts (including from high-demand faiths like Mormonism, which he personally left). He works with thoughtful, driven individuals ready to face what’s not working and create a more grounded, meaningful life. Dominic’s style is practical, collaborative, and direct—with a touch of humor when it helps. Sessions focus on real change, not just talk. Clients appreciate his ability to hold space for hard emotions while offering clarity, tools, and support to move forward. If you’re ready to feel more like yourself again and take the next step toward growth, Dominic is here to help. Call, email, or visit his website to schedule a free consultation. Note: Dr. Dominic Schmuck accepts Aetna insurance (excluding Medicaid, Medicare, and Aetna CVS plans) or private pay. Superbills available for out-of-network reimbursement. Therapy hours: Mon–Fri, 9am–2pm.

How does couples therapy work and how can it help?
I am Gottman Method Couples Therapy Levels 1 and 2 trained, which is the most comprehensive, evidence-based and effective therapy available for relationship improvement today. Based on over five decades of research in relationship psychology, the Gottman Method utilizes structured and solution-focused interventions. My treatment approach to couples therapy represents an integration of interventions and techniques from the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Relational-Cultural Psychotherapy, Bowen’s Family Systems Theory, and Attachment Theory, as well as evidence-based approaches, including Trauma-Informed Care, and Internal Family Systems amongst others. I welcome all types of couples and respect how partners define their unique relationships. Couples counseling can be beneficial for a wide continuum of concerns/difficulties, ranging from couples/partners who want to simply improve and optimize their relationships to those who are in a serious crisis and feel close to the breaking point. Couples often seek my help when they encounter roadblocks or lack intimacy— At times, they may be repeating the same destructive patterns, engaging in the same arguments and processes, experiencing a rupture of trust or infidelity, lacking of understanding or compassion, engaging in disagreements about priorities, having disparate needs for emotional closeness, experiencing feelings of neglect or overwhelm, or sensing a general relationship malaise. Other common difficulties include sexual intimacy, becoming parents or parenting dilemmas, an emotional or sexual affair, negotiating life’s trials ranging from finances to in-law relationships, and conscious uncoupling in separation or divorce. By working with me, couples gain insights into their relational dynamics, core relational themes which we are rooted in both their shared journey as well as their families of origin. I recommend effective strategies to improve relational dynamics, leading the couple to experience new ways of being and relating to one another both inside and outside of the therapeutic room.
