How does person-centered therapy work, and what do sessions look like?
In accordance with a person-centered approach, I believe that you, as my clients, are the experts in your own lives. I meet you with empathy and a genuine desire to hear your stories. You are capable of identifying what works best for you, and I am here to support you throughout that process. I firmly believe that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach. More importantly, I want to help you find the tools and coping strategies that are right for you.
Life happens and suddenly something has shifted, you may feel stuck and overwhelmed, and you are not sure how to find your footing again. Change is genuinely hard. My own path included a career change, moving halfway across the world, and starting a family of my own. For eight years I have worked with adults navigating anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and the weight of burnout or dealing with a life that looks different than you planned. I work with people from diverse backgrounds and enjoy this aspect of my work because it allows me to learn from my clients, expand my horizons, and broaden my own perspective in meaningful ways. In our sessions, we work at your pace. I help you examine thoughts that feel like facts, notice patterns that keep you stuck, and build practical skills for when anxiety or stress takes hold. You set the direction. I listen closely, ask questions, and help connect what you are thinking, feeling, and doing, so that change starts to feel possible. If you have been putting off reaching out, that makes sense. Starting therapy takes courage, and you do not need to have everything figured out before the first conversation. Whether something has built slowly over years or caught you off guard, there is room here for all of it. I would be glad to hear what is on your mind.

I am Dr. Tung Phan, a kind and dedicated psychiatrist specializing in both internal medicine and psychiatry. After earning my medical degree from Tufts University, I completed my residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern. This extensive training enables me to effectively address both physical and mental health concerns, providing my patients with thorough and balanced care. Throughout my career, I have been honored with accolades such as the Resident Teaching Award and the AΩA Resident Nominee. In addition to my clinical work, I take great pride in teaching and mentoring medical students, helping to shape the future of the healthcare field. As part of my commitment to advancing the medical profession, I contribute through research and publications, and serve as an Assistant Editor for Academic Psychiatry. My research focuses on improving healthcare access and enhancing the understanding of complex medical conditions. Outside of my medical practice, I find joy in writing, and I've been fortunate to have my work published in various outlets. Both patients and colleagues appreciate my caring and careful approach. I am always here to welcome new patients and am committed to providing the highest standard of care possible. You can reach me for inquiries or appointments by phone or at my work address in Somerville, MA. *Specialties •Mood Disorders •Bipolar Disorder •Trauma and PTSD •ADHD •OCD •Substance Use Disorders *Conditions treated •Depression •Anxiety •Bipolar disorders •Schizophrenia •PTSD •ADHD •Substance Abuse •Relationship Issues •Insomnia •Panic Attacks •Panic Disorder •OCD •Stress •Transitions *Treatment philosophy My purpose is to empower you to gain deeper insight and clarity, helping you lead a more intentional life.
