How do you work with clients on the autism spectrum?
When working with clients on the autism spectrum, I focus on creating a calm, supportive, and neurodiversity-affirming space where clients feel respected and understood. I recognize that every autistic individual has unique strengths, needs, communication styles, and sensory experiences, so I tailor therapy to fit the person rather than expecting them to fit a single model. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally aware, with an emphasis on helping clients feel safe, build self-understanding, and develop tools that genuinely support their well-being.
In sessions, I may integrate person-centered therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, strength-based support, and CBT-informed tools in ways that are practical and accessible. Depending on the client’s goals, we may work on emotional regulation, anxiety, identity, self-advocacy, stress management, life transitions, relationships, or processing overwhelming experiences. I also aim to honor sensory needs, communication preferences, and the client’s own pace, while supporting greater confidence, resilience, and self-acceptance.
