How do you work with clients with trauma and PTSD?
Working with clients who have experienced trauma and PTSD requires a sensitive and trauma-informed approach. Establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic environment is paramount. I begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment to understand the specific traumas, triggers, and symptoms they are experiencing. This assessment helps inform the treatment plan. I employ evidence-based techniques such as trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address the underlying trauma. These approaches help clients process and reframe traumatic experiences in a supportive and controlled setting. Additionally, grounding and mindfulness exercises are incorporated to help clients regulate their emotions and manage distressing symptoms. Psychoeducation about trauma and its effects, as well as coping skills for managing triggers, are provided. It's important to approach the work at the client's pace, allowing them to reclaim a sense of control and autonomy over their own healing journey. Regular check-ins, ongoing support, and flexibility in the treatment approach are crucial for ensuring the client feels heard, validated, and empowered on their path towards healing and recovery.
I treat various patients, including ages 5 and up, and all socioeconomic ranges. I aim to provide my patients with whatever they need through our outpatient programs. I embrace a holistic approach to the care I provide to my patients.

Why is trauma processing important?
People who have experienced trauma often don't realize how extensive the effects can be. Many people I work with often don't even identify traumatic events from their past as traumas. They come to therapy wanting to deal with anxiety or depression, but after a few sessions, we discover how deeply an event hurt them. Trauma affects your body by creating wiring in your brain to keep you from getting hurt, but it can get over-active, like an over-protective best friend! When you get triggered, even by something that seems unrelated, your body kick starts a survival program that releases stress hormones into your body so you can fight for your life or run away. This would be helpful if you were getting ready to fight a bear, but is not so helpful when you need to manage day to day tasks. Trauma processing can help your body to stop reacting to everyday triggers and to find healing from pain. People ask, how will they know they are done. My answer is, when your body and mind feel like the event is just a memory without feeling the intensity as if the event is still happening in the present. Through careful, specific trauma therapy, you can finally release your painful past and move forward into a healthy life.
I get it! On the outside, maybe you seem fine. You’re balancing everything life throws at you...but there are times when you’re overwhelmed. You feel like whatever you do, it doesn’t seem to be “enough.” Everyone around you seems to be happier, more put together, and you can't figure out why. You spend so much effort pushing feelings away, that you’re not enjoying life. It doesn't have to be this way. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, trauma, stressful relationships, parenting, depression, or grief, there's a path towards joy and calm! Asking for help can be scary, but don’t worry! I’ve got you! I want to work with you to let go of the dark cloud that hangs over you so you can enjoy life again (or maybe for the first time). I use evidence-based therapies and tailor your treatment to you. I specialize in counseling for teens, young adults, women, first responders, and veterans, and can provide Christian counseling, but treat people from all backgrounds. My clients tell me that they've never felts so safe and cared for than in our therapy sessions. You don't have to feel alone in this any more. I offer a FREE 15 minute consultation for you to get to know me and to make sure you feel comfortable. I received my Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas and trained at the Veteran's Health Administration in the PTSD Clinic. I also provided school-based mental health to high school students, worked in a group practice treating individuals and couples, and have led grief groups and camps. I'm an active volunteer for justice and to make the world a safer, kinder place for everyone.

How do you work with clients with trauma and PTSD?
Typically I start off with focusing on the coping skills from breath work, TF-CPT to grounding techniques to CBT skills in order to decrease the symptoms reported. In addition I provide validation, understanding and normalizing their reactions to the event experienced. I allow for the client to discuss the incident on their time and terms and utilize a trauma narrative when the client is ready to process.
Lizette is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has been helping individuals, children and families for 19 years. She earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Masters degree of Science in Counseling. She has clinical experience with individual and family sessions, conducting groups, and working as a Clinical Director. Her philosophy is helping teach families and children ways to enrich their abilities and help them thrive. Lizette’s first step is to help de-mystify psychological terms in order for everyone to gain a better understanding of what is going on. The work begins when skills are introduced in order to increase the use of positive emotional management. Let’s face it – change is hard, when trying to stop or start something new everything takes time, but it can be done with clinical help and support. She utilizes a variety of tools that can help in decreasing problematic symptoms to include Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychoeducation, Grounding Techniques and the list goes on. Everything will be openly communicated and tailored to your individual needs in order to make sure the treatment plan is a good fit.

Why is trauma processing important?
Childhood trauma occurs when we experience or witness negative events we aren’t prepared for or don’t have support in recovering from. This might look like physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, neglect, substance abuse by a parent or other adult, witnessing violence or abuse toward someone else in the home, or not having our basic physical and emotional needs met. Growing up with trauma or toxic family dynamics makes us more likely to experience stress and anxiety later in our lives. Survivors of such situations are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses, have difficulty with attention spans, struggle with academic or professional performance, and have difficulty coping with stress. There is a ton of healing that is done just by telling our story. Often we see symptoms reduce significantly after getting it off our chests. Realizing you’re not alone also helps, and knowing that others who have experienced what you have experienced have healed lets us know it can be done. Working to process trauma includes looking at the common effects, relationship dynamics, and behavioral patterns we often see in those that have undergone trauma. We work to realize it's not what's wrong with you, but what happened to you. In addition, processing trauma includes identifying and interrupting triggers and planning a course of action to set new patterns and behaviors in place.

One of my favorite quotes is by the poet Rupi Kaur and it says, “And here you are living despite it all”. Sometimes we get dealt difficult cards in life. Yet through all the hardships we survive. However, I believe that in life we should do more than just survive or exist, we should live and experience each day to the fullest. That is what I want to help you do.  I was born and raised in Houston and love my city with everything in me. I began my college freshman year at Hampton University, but transferred after one semester to Texas State University, where I finished my undergraduate degree. At this point you may be asking what made me spend one semester at an illustrious HBCU and then move back to Texas to attend one of the largest PWI’s in the state. It’s because I wasn’t living, I was simply existing.  During my freshman year of college, I experienced my first battle with mental health. In simpler terms, I wasn’t happy. I was severely depressed. In the same year, I was privileged enough to have parents who cared and found a therapist for me. I began to realize not everyone has parents who would go to the ends of earth for them, that therapy isn’t always affordable for everyone, and that as black people we don’t always have the best experiences with mental health professionals. After experiencing my own mental health struggles, and watching those I cared for struggle, I began to rethink my desired career in interior design. The moment I decided to join the small percentage of black therapists and be the change I wished to see was one of the best decisions I ever made. Let's begin your journey so that you can go from existing to living. You may be wondering what the CTP behind my name means. Certified Trauma Professional (CTP). This means I've undergone specialized training to understand and treat trauma in its many forms—be it emotional, physical, or psychological. I know that trauma can cast a long shadow over your life, affecting your mental health, relationships, and even your sense of self. That's why I'm committed to providing a safe and nurturing space where you can explore your experiences and feelings without judgment. I've faced my own challenges that have shaped me both personally and professionally. I understand that the journey through healing is deeply personal, and can be complex. My role is to walk beside you on this path, while offering specialized knowledge and tools to help you navigate your journey towards healing. I am here to support you in moving from merely surviving to truly thriving. If you're ready to take that brave step toward healing, I'm here to guide and support you through your transformative journey. Let's work together to unlock the barriers that have been holding you back, so you can live your life to the fullest. Let's begin your journey today. I work with individuals of all backgrounds including individuals from the BIPOC and LBGTQIA+ community who are dealing with life transitions, trauma, relationship problems, anxiety, and depression. I am experienced in cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy. However, I work from a person-centered eclectic perspective. This means first and foremost I want to get to know you and what brings you to therapy, then together we can build the proper form of treatment for you.  Starting therapy can be a scary thing. I am a stranger to you right now and opening up about life’s hardest battles to a stranger can be daunting. Researching therapists is already a huge step, be proud of that! If you find yourself ready to take the next step, I hope to become more than a stranger and support you through your healing journey. Take the next step, let's unleash your strengths today. Let's begin your journey today. The Journey to Self-Discovery Every individual is unique, and so is their healing journey. As a therapist, I believe in the importance of a tailored approach. By understanding your unique experiences, challenges, and goals, we can work together to develop a therapeutic plan that resonates with you. For some, this might involve exploring past traumas and understanding their impact on present-day behaviors.
